View Full Version : New Idea for a Sump

I need a sump for my new 180 gallon tank. I was going to use a 6ft tank such as a 125 gallon or 100 gallon unfortunatly neither fit in the sump due to length.

My idea is to use six 10 gallon fish tank plumbed together. They would all be drilled and have bulkhead fittings. I could use one tank as an intake and protein skimming, then the next 4 tanks could be species only tanks and then the last tank is a return.
Any input or other ideas for a sump would be most appreciated.

Not sure what "speceiec" means, but in theory this would work. Are you planning on gravity feeding from on tank to the next, like a set of stairs under your tank? Could work well, 2 or 3 could be chaeto, 2 could be for reactors and 1 or 2 could be for liverock. Its going to be a lot of work to set it all up so its working right. And remember that each one isnt going to hold a full 10gallons, it will be closer to 7 or 8 so it may be just as easy to set up a 75g tank and go with that. You could also build a stand that would accomodate a 6ft tank underneath and just use the 125.

Sounds like a lot of work when you could just find something that would fit or make one that would .

I use a 55 gallon under my 150. If you could fit it you could try a 90.

I think I am going to try a 75 gallon tank didn't think of it. I was looking for something short so I could fit my arm in easily.

I wouldn't do it for the simple fact that more bulkheads offer more points of failure in the system. Plus 10g tanks are difficult to drill.

I think it's kind of a good idea but I would not do it. With that many overflows the chances of one getting clogged up and overflowing increases a lot I would think.

The 75 is the way to go definitely. Your idea, while it would be cool, would be a pain in the arse to plumb and way too many bulkhead fittings. Too many possible leak points IMO.

Sounds like too much work.... but intriguing
