I am looking for background information on Chaetomorpha in the aquarium industry. Does any one know how it got started in the aquarium industry? Where does most of the chaeto come from in the industry? Is is aquacultured of is it wild caught? What are the most common species (seems like it is C. linum in my research)?

Any help with these questions is much appreciated!

Thanks

I don't know any history regarding chaeto.

It is aquacultured and many hobbyists literally throw it away when they thin it out since they can't find enough hobbyists to pick it up for free.

Identifying chaeto or any algae is difficult to specie & may require the use of a microscope plus identifying other life stages they can take. FWIW, I don't have a lot of trust in what many of the lfs or even many aquiculturists ID their specie as unless they have an experienced phycologist on staff. Even experienced phycologists fight over the proper ID of the algae to specie.
