Hey all, I could really use your help. I am currently working on a 22" cube (about 46g) and I am contemplating useing a Eheim 1262 pump (900gph) and a Tunze 9005 protein skimmer. I have heard that the Eheim is a very reliable pump but my main questions on both are how quiet in operation are they?
I also wanted to know if 900 gph would be too much considering that I will be running a fuge/ sump? Should I maybe go with the 1260 (635gph)?

Please guys, provide me as much info as you can as I am trying to make this setup as best and as quiet as possible and I have not purchased the equipment yet so I am open to different suggestions

Thanks.:wavehand:

I think even a 1260 will be on the heavy side for return.
Eheims are my fav, dead silent too.
Everyone I know w/ the tunze skimmer loves them.
Eheim and Tunze are my 2 favs, I don't think either make a bad product.

i have the ehiem 1262 on my 90gal. it wasn't silent at first but after a few weeks it was almost dead silent. it's definitely a lot of flow for a 46g. but if that's what you want i say go for it.

I suppose you have it in your sump. Did you have to put any padding underneath to lessen any vibrations or is it just that quiet?

Thank you for your imput. The 1260 is 635 gph, the next smaller pump is only 317gph. I don't know if that will be enough. I will be using a vortech or tunze nano but I dont know if 317 gph will be sufficient. What do you guys think.

1262 is a good quiet pump. The flow will be less depending on your head loss. keep that in mind.

i have an eheim 1262 return pump on a 29g tank along with 2 tunze nanostreams. 1262 will not b much flow for a 46g tk, if that is your only flow.

I was thinking of adding 1 tunze 6055 but would consider going solo if it would work as I dont plan on keeoing many if any sps and plan on having 2 returns with a scwd wave maker. I just dont want it to be too much for the sump/ fuge

I normally shoot for 3-5x turnover for sump.
I'm sure the 1260 will be fine, and if you ever upgrade for $10 you can change volute to a 1262, same pump.
I personally love the tunze nano 6025's, and I usually do the flow mods on those, quick and easy.

I have an external 1260 running a 3/4 in. scwd in my custom 40g shallow.
The scwd has quite a bit of head loss but it's perfect for me and very quiet.

Did you mean turnover for the tank or sump? Both the 1262 & 1260 will give me way more than 5 x's for my sump as it will only be a 22g.

What do you mean I can upgrade for $10? Will eheim allow you to do this after youve used the pump?

What kind of mods did you do for the Tunze's? I never knew they could be modded.

I have a 9010. Noise is not really an issue BUT I think you could get a much better skimmer for the price.

When I first got my 9010, I was happy with it. At the time I had mostly fish and LR only. Just a couple of softies.

Now that my tank is getting stocked the thing is under performing like crazy. I get very little skimate. I tried everything, nothing has helped.

Which skimmer would you recommend. For me noise is a very big issue. I lso would like the pump to be low on power consumption and it must have a small footprint as I will only have a 6" x 18" area

To replace the 9005, I'd prob go with Deltec MCE-300 or even better, the MCE-500. They are prob quieter that the Tunxe DOC's

Im looking at both Aqua C or Vertex for my app. Have not decided yet.

The mce 500 looks really nice but I am not looking at spending that much and I don't want a hob. Do you know if the 500 will fit and if so of any place that may sell it cheaper?

3-5x turnover is display volume.
The diff between 1260 and 1262 is just the volute, you can order from eheim or other places and just swap it.
I would just go 1260, and if it seems too much tune it down.
There is also a Tunze silence that is very similar and great quality that has a restrictor already on it.
As for the tunze mods, they are easy, and tunze does not void warranty.
You can increase flow, and another mod will widen flow pattern.
Mr Pink Floyd posted this first I believe, search it, or I can add my photos here of how to.
I've never heard any complaints of noise or performance on tunze docs, but there are lots of choices, that would be mine.

I'm running a Tunze 9010 on my 40 breeder, and I really like it. I picked it up used to replace an Aqua C Remora when I added a sump. It is far superior to the Remora. It is pretty quiet, pulls about 50-100 ml of skimmate a day on my well-stocked tank, and is pretty much plug and forget. There are skimmers out there that definitely pull more, skim drier, etc., but Tunze is well-made, good stuff that is reliable and proven. Maybe you can find a good one used and give it a spin first.

What kind of overflows (in gph) are you using? You have to determine that before people can/should recommend a return pump.

I believe I will be using the glass holes 700 gph over flow
