View Full Version : Hardwood or rug runner?

OK, so I'm almost done emptying the 55 gallon and will soon start scooping the sand out of the bottom, disassembling the HOB refugium, and getting it out of the living room. Then I'll want to do a quick wall and floor cleaning and move the 92 gallon in.
Trivia question: do I want to run to the local store and pick up a section of rug for under the corner tank or should I put the stand and tank directly on the hardwood? I'm trying to think of anything that is "now or never" and this is one of those things. What are the advantages to having a piece of carpeting under it? Disadvantages?

well if the rug was to get soaked with salt water it could not be removed for drying....

I put mine right on the hardwood. When you spill it's easier to dry up the hardwood than carpet.
I picked up a cheap piece of indoor/outdoor carpet and always laid that on the floor when doing any maintenance. Easy to roll up or hang outside to dry afterward.

So I'm almost at the point where the 55 gallon tank and black wooden stand are going to be leaving their corner, but of course we can't figure out where to put it to get it out of our way. And then once I do figure out where to put it, then what? If I see it hanging around too long I may get a crazy idea about setting it back up again - I do NOT want to do that. I want to keep it to two saltwater tanks and two outdoor ponds. I'm half thinking about putting it out on the street with a sign saying "FREE - Take It Away" but I'll really be ****ed if some wiseass kids come by and crack it in the middle of the night. I was going to advertise it but I don't think I'd get enough to make it worth my time and trouble to scrub it down and make it sellable. 55's are easy to come by - not a big demand for them.
That being said, if anyone on here wants it, it's yours. It's not cleaned, it's got a black-painted back, and a few scratches on the front glass (hardly noticeable when it's clean and full).
Let me know - the offer is probably only good through the weekend - after that I'm going to find someplace to get rid of it.

Put it right on the hard wood. It will be easier to level the tank. I've had to shim all of my stands that were on carpet to get them to be reasonably level.
I normally have a cheap remnant that I put on the floor when I'm cleaning the tank to keep the "drips" from getting on the carpet.

My suggestion would be to buy 1/4 plywood, that has a smooth finish side and cover it with role vinyl flooring. Make it large enough to extend past all sides of the tank by a foot or spilage. Then outline that with trim to give it a finish look. That will protect the finish on the floors. I had a tank for years on a hardwood floor, and it really takes a toll on the wood. My wife is much happier now, since you can't see the salt on the floor if you choose a light color floor. Just make sure you seal the ends of the plywood with calk to prevent swelling if you should have a major flood.

Might have seriously considered that if the tank wasn't already in place and full of water. :sad2:

if the 55 is still there, let me know sue, i might have a spot for it since my 20 gallon stand was under 5" of water and the particle board is ready to fall apart...may be time to upgrade

Sorry Ren.... I had posted Saturday night that I would give the tank and stand to anyone who came and got it that night and it got taken away two hours later.
