The difference is how long they last and how much surface area of carbon there is. You can wait longer between swapping it out because it absorbs more.

Seachem matrix
why: 1. because its just large enough to sit on my reactor plate without a sponge underneath (important when your running two medias in one reactor and dont want to buy extra pads) 2. I buy into the hydrodynamics of the sperical shape 3. while they say there are 2 or 3 better aquarium trade carbons (Rox, lignite/hydrocarbon ) the chemistry forum guru's in the industry still says its superior to everything else out there. 4) its very clean and easily rinsed (unlike TLF hydrocarbon) and not to be overlooked 5) I can easily get it locally at several stores.

BRS ROX for me as well. They have a video on thier site that shows the effectiveness of various types of carbon. ROX is more expensive up front, but likely the same or less cost in the long run because it should last longer and you can use less.

good video, but how do you know it last longer? I mean i change my carbon every 5 weeks so this BRS ROX could last 8 weeks or more?

I would count on superior functioning or using less for the same effect. there really hasn't been any indication carbon last a long time in aquarium use period. By 8 weeks it becomes coated with debri and bacteria so extended use is not a good idea no matter how well it works. Most people believe carbon last 2-4wks max while I've heard science oriented people state in testing it only works significantly for a couple days. the rationale for extended use is based on capacity but I guess its possible if it works significantly faster it could reach capacity at the same time but having removed alot more organics in that time.
who can tell when carbon exhaust anyway. I sure as heck cant nor do I notice any subjective/objective differences when I do or dont. I just run it beecause.

Black Diamond for me -
I support my LFS, and only buy online if it's absolutely necessary.
