so i've now started researching skimmers.

i'm probably only gonna be able to fit a 10 gallon sump/fuge on my 41G tank.

so i found this skimmer and wondered if anyone had used it or heard of if it is good bad or otherwise...

i like that it doesn't take up much space in my sump and should be able to handle what i need it to. i think.

my only other question is, will it take enough stuff out to keep soft corals and perhaps some LPS? i don't think i'll be tangling with SPS corals at this juncture....

sorry if this should be in the equipment forum....but i'm new to the hobby, so i figure it fits in here with all the noob questions.

dont even bother. way under sized to the point you'd be better spending the money on a media reactor and live stock. you should look into the vertex 80 or octopus NWB-110 (since your looking at marine depot and they sell them both). the tunze should be limited to 15g or small all in one cubes where nothing else better will fit. you could keep softies and LPS with no skimmer but since your going to get one and spend $150 anyway might as well get an appropriately sized and performing skimmer.

agreed on the larger skimmer. in the price range there are quite a few other skimmer options that are very affordable. good luck searching!

they won't fit in my cabinet. that's my problem. cabinet is only 23 inches tall.

that's why i was looking for something small. i didn't see the nwb models of the octos. i'm searching thru them now. cool...thanks for the heads up. i'm not looking to break the bank, but i'm not OVERLY price sensitive either. so if there are better ones that would fit, please let me know. thanks!

I'd go with a Remora. In fact I did. And love it.

the octopus will fit, its like 19" tall and needs maybe a 1" or so to remove the cup. also even though its footprint is 10x6" and a standard 10g is 10" front to back it wont fit the short way unless you trim the plate. otherwise it has to go the long way. My octo has the same dimensions (and pretty much the same design minus the funnel top). I doubt MD is the cheapest place at $170 so check some commonly used sponsor prices too. (premium aquatics, reef specialty ect)

to make it fit orientated this way in a 10g

you'd have to trim the base like so (not this much, I over did it. maybe a .25")

these are also better than the tunze and will fit in a relatively tight space (and yes even though its a marineland it works way better than a tunze nano. I've seen both in action enough. not even close)

this would be much better than the tunze as well and will fit the short way

These are identicle to the discontinued Octopus TS-120 http://www.premiumaquatics.com/coralvue/TS-120.jpg (which are identicle to my Octopus PS-120 pictured above sans funnel top. at the time you could get both and they were th same price) EXCEPT they use resun pumps instead of octopus pumps.

all the appropriately sized tunze will also easily fit but run $260 and up. a 9005 or 9010 are much more appropriate skimmers for 40g, even a softy/LPS one. you can basically use their sps rating for any use since IMO they skim just like they look like they do, no where near as well as larger simularly priced pinwheel skimmers. their small footprint (especially the nano) sacrafices performance for space.

no point of having a hang on back when you go thru the trouble of having a sump which can hide this stuff (especially the remora which is virtually the last hang on back to have the pump sitting in the display). the urchin is for sump but wont fit 23" and allow the cup to be removed. I dont love em. cost too much for dated underperforming design (CPR Aero, all octopus hob, e-shopps hob, warner marine hob ect all superior). they perform EXACTLY like the tunze with more noise. EV series on the other hand are pretty good skimmers and will fit but they arent budget skimmers.
