I'm cycling a 55g 48"x12"x17" HOB filter. It is going to be a reef set up. I would like some insight on how many and what size power heads will move the water enough for many corals. Thanx.

i prefer the wide spread flow type powerheads, the SureFlo mods on MJ1200s worked great in my 55s, one in each back corner about half way down and slightly angled up to get the surface some agitation for good gas exchange.

I have a 55 gallon tank as well and I am running a Seino M1100 powerhead. produces 1100gph flow and comes with great hardware for several different mounting positions. Mine faces the front right corner of the tank and it creates great water flow to the surface and undercurrent under my rocks.

Unless you want to spend some $ on tunzes are vortech (which on a 55 I probably wouldn't) i'd say the modded maxi 1200s are your best option. If you don't know what were talking about do a google on maxi jet mod and you will find instructions. It basically turns a basic maxi pump into a high performance powerhead...very cool.

Koralia 2, 3, or 4 would be another option, widespread flow, reasonably priced, magnet for easy placement.

And they use a LOT less power than maxi 1200. My stock maxi 1200 (295GPH) uses about 24-25 watts/hour. My stock Koralia 2 (600PGH) uses about 11 watt/hour.

I have a Koralia's in my 110 and like them. they work well and were priced well. Be careful of the E-bay knockoffs. I have heard of electrical leakage in them.

How many gallons per hour will I need? How many?

I would go with koralias myself. best bang for your buck. What are you wanting to keep?

Couple of Koralia 4's should give you good flow in a 55g.

bang for the buck = Koralia's.

I have a 70 gal DT with 2 X Koralia 4 and 2 X Koralia Magnum 5's (alternating on a wave maker)

+1 Cheap and the options are endless with sizes.

Generally speaking, you want 20x turnover of tank volume for an sps dominated reef tank. So you would want 1100 gallons per hour total including your HOB filter. I would say 15x turnover for lps, and 10x turnover for a fish only tank. Do the math before you purchase your powerheads. These are just general guidelines. Hope that helps!

These #'s are on the low side. Some people able to get 100x's!!! I did on my 55g when I was BB and SPS.

I have a new 55g also and have just gone with 2-Koralia 3's. There seems to be plenty of flow in the tank with them. But I am still pretty new and have no coral yet.
