My Crocea appears very healthy - Its almost always open all day and its mantle is fully extended to catch the light from the 175 mh 10k bulbs. It retracts quickly when shadows pass and generally looks excellent.

But ... I did notice that it didn't close all the way when I moved it to kill an aiptasia. The mantle retracted, but the clam was not fully closed despite my handling it. The shell had about a 1/2" gap and it didn't "clam up". It almost looked like it couldn't close all the way.

Any thoughts?

It may have been holding a little water inside to give you a shot in the eye if it felt really threatened.

I find that some clams are just more relaxed than others. If I pick up and hold my maxima (under water of course), it will open up right in my hand if I hold it for more than a few seconds. My gigas never completely closes.
