Base rock or "dry rock" from ancient dry reefs.

Look at marco rocks. I just got 50 #'s of their key largo dry yesterday and it's great rock.

Yes it can... There can be lots of dead stuff in dead rocks.

To avoid this I Bleach the rocks to oxidize anything dead in the rocks when I got them. I then rinse them well and then soaked them in dechlorinator . After that I let them completely air dry. You must use pure unscented bleach.

After a few months you will never know they are dead rocks..

I would just try to find someone tearing down or has tore down a tank local and get their rocks.

The marco rock has no die off. Just rinse it good. I wouldnt add more than a few pieces at a time though to be safe.

Edit: Actually I see on there site some of their rock is precycled now... It was not when I bought mine.

I would still do it just incase though..
