I purchased a 40 breeder a few weeks ago. There is no center brace, but it looks like one was cut off (the plastic is rough...looks like someone took a knife and grinder to it). Should there be a plastic brace?

Depends on the manufacturer. I have an "Aquarium Masters" with a center brace that is held in place with silicone. Every other one I've seen is braceless.

Ok. I wasn't worried about it, but there are definitly marks on the rim that made me think that there was a center brace originally and the LFS took it off.

It think it definitely depends on the Mfr.

My daughter has one in her room that she keeps her turtle in, and it has a center brace.

If you look at a picture of one on the Aqueon website, it doesn't.

If it was a designated reptile tank than it may have one because they are usually thinner glass, and I wouldnt use it for an aquarium anyway.

The one my daughter has her turtle in was in fact a fish tank. I actually got it from a LFS about 6/7 years ago cheap when they mis-drilled the backs of a bunch of them for 1/2" bulkheads. I should've been clearer about that. I said she could have it in a moment of weakness. Daughters can have that effect on ya. Turtle's huge now. No way she gets a 90G, lol!

I got mine from marineland, maybe not entirely sure, but I thought my LFS store cut the brace out. I talked to the manufacturer and they said they just bought another company and all the trim had center braces. But when they took over, they used thicker glass and still used the trim from the old company, and just cut it. I believe marineland bought out aqeuon although I may be wrong on this.

I recently heard that rumor too at the LFS, that marineland bought out aqueon, which used to be all-glass, and I remember the all-glass brand tanks had a brace on their 40b, so that makes sense.

I just bought an Aqueon an hour ago and no center brace.

I cut the center brace out on mine 2 years ago and have had no problems with it.

I wouldnt do that without at least euro-bracing it.
