I have a 50G tank with live rock that has all of a sudden sprouted what I've done some research on and seems to be blackbeard algae, it's like little black hair balls on my live rock. The issue I have is that there does not seem to be any type of way to get rid of this in saltwater aquariums??? Every webpage I went to was for freshwater... Am I the only one that has this type of algae in their saltwater aquarium? I've never seen it before, though after reading about it, high phosphates and low nitrates seem to be where it likes to grow....which unfortunately is my tank right now. I am working on removing phosphates with Phosguard which doesn't seem to be working well. All other parameters seem to be good right now, but the phosphates are at 1.0ppm. ANY help would be great! Thanks!

Scrap the phosguard & run GFO & chaeto. How 'bout a picture of the so called "blackbeard algae" in your tank?

ive only ever heard of it in freshwater, and pretty much if you get it in freshwater you almost have to nuke whatever its on... nothing really eats it and its a pain to scrape off.

Here it is, hope it works, sorry that it isn't that good, but it's the best I could get. I guess looking at it it might no be black, but a REALLY dark brown instead...

I've been searching around and still haven't seen it in anything other than freshwater threads... I'll get the GFO ASAP.
