I am planning my 180 gal tank and I read in many threads how to cover a tank so that “carpet-surfing” can be avoided.
I was wondering how much light will be “reflected” by different net-types.
So I did a little research. Here the outcome:

Test setup without anything: 1500 Lux

- Clear glass-cover 9mm thick (0.35 in.): 1400 Lux, or approx. -7% light reduction

- light dusty glass 9mm thick (0.35 in.): 1300 Lux, approx. -13% light reduction

- black “bird’s net” from Lowes, opening 15x15mm (0.5x05 in.), 2mm (0.08 in.) thick: 1350 Lux, or approx. 10% light reduction

- clear netting XN-0260, Material Polyethylene, opening 5.5x5.5mm (0.22x0.22 in.), 1.4mm (0.06 in.) thick: 1300 Lux, or approx. 13% light reduction

- white netting XN-2170, Material Polyethylene, opening 8x7mm (0.31x0.28 in.), 2mm (0.08 in.) thick: 1250 Lux, or approx. 17% light reduction

- black netting XB-1131, Material extruded HDPE, opening 6x6mm (0.24x0.24 in.), 2.5mm (0.10 in.) thick: 950 Lux, or approx. 37% light reduction

These are empirical collected results. Just a rough guidance.

Maybe others are willing to share there experiences regarding building nets/frames and how they are holding up under HQI and saltwater.

BTW, Industrial Netting was so kind to send me same hand samples.

Why are the first two negative percents, do they increase the amount of light?

Sorry, they shouldn't be negative.
Also, I think would be better in the "Do It Yourself" Forum. :eek2:
Can I move this thread?

Thanks!
