Krylon Fusion is a popular choice.

+1 i recently painted a 55g with krylon flat black, it usually comes out nicer with flat black, if thats the color you had in mind

If possible, I would get a sheet of acrylic (doesn;t need to be thick) cut to size and paint that. This way if you ever want to change things up it is super easy. You can even paint one side blue, the other black, and see what you like better. Either way, +1 on Krylon Fusion.

is that paint safe for aquariums? if id want to paint my pvc plumbing thats used for my return pump from my sump. would it be safe that after its dried i can plumb it into my aquariums water?

I would go to a sign shop and ask them to sell you a piece of black vinyl and have them cut it to size and stick it on the back. That's what is did to all of my tanks. Its quick and you dont have to wait for it to dry.

spray paint is harder to get it even. i would use a paint roller. it's easier and much more uniform.

Yes it is fine once it dries, which is really fast. I had it on a pvc overflow for over a year no issues.

The first time I ever really spraypainted anything was the back of a 10g tank with the krylon and it was much easier. I imagine cheaper as well.

Just to throw it out there, do not use krylon fusion on spa-flex PVC, the flexible PVC tubing. It will never dry on spa-flex, but works fine for regular PVC.

if you use spray paint i would recommend cover the whole aquarium except for the part that is needed to be painted...

Are you painting glass or acrylic, and is the tank already set up, or is it new and can be moved around? I always just used a foam brush and applied a few thick coats of Rustoleum flat black on my new glass tanks that I laid flat on its side. No brush strokes and it came out nicely.

I would never paint my tank. its messy and a pain in the a$$. I went to a sign shop and got some vinyl which goes on very uniform and it is available in many different colors as well. Its cheap and it keeps everything looking clean especially if you view the back of your tank in a fish room or something
