I have a question about my sand. It lately has had an orange covering layer that almost seems like algae. This layer will disappear when the sand is disturbed and is only on the sand. I have an XP4 filter and a moderately strong current going. I don't really like the look of it and is there a solution to this?

It is probably diatoms, which is basically a kind of algae. It is pretty common in new tanks, so I wouldn't worry about it unless there is some other related problem, or if it still an issue when the tank is a bit more mature (~6 months).

Most likely diatom or cyanobacteria. Diatom blooms usually happen with young tanks and generally fade away as the tank matures. Cyano can bloom in a young tank also, but is usually more persistent than diatoms. Cyano generally caused by a nutrient overload. It usually grows in low flow areas of the tank, like down on your sand.

Sounds like diatoms, but if you post a pic then we can verify that for you.
