I've been looking at one of my red-orange monti caps that's growing in a place I can't see it as well (the scrolling angle is steep and I mostly see the underside). My tank sits on a much higher stand (43" tall) than most.

The cap is only about 3" around, but I'm considering removing it and breaking it into small pieces (about the size of Cheerio's around)... and just scattering it onto the rocks and see what happens.

Anyone do anything like this? I may also do it to the green cap that I have.

It's been my experience that when loose they don't attach on their own unless in a minimal flow area, it seams that any flow causes them to move/rock around and they are very slow to grow. if you'll spot glue then down with a little gel super glue they'll encrust fairly quick. YMMV

They will probably fall off unless you glue them. Everytime I have tried something like that they fall, unless they are really wedged in.

Try bigger pieces and wedge them between the rocks.
