How do I get rid of mushrooms? I bought some a few years agoas a noob and I want them gone. I have sold a few rocks covered with mushrooms, but they are starting to get on everything. Has any had and luck getting rid of these?

Frag them and trade at your LFS.

I agree, slice off with a razor blade (trade if possible), then scrub off where it was on the rock. Eventually you will win, but you will have to be persistant. Like aiptasia or any other pest, they will eventually go away, but you will pull your hair out a few times in the interim.

Move the rock up close to the lights. They will let go and you can remove them. If you cut them off and anything remains they will be back. The Joe's Juice also works, but it may take several applications. R

Lye!
Worked wonders when I had to get rid of tons in my tank!

If you can remove the rock from the tank, use a dremmel and cut a small portion of the rock away where they are growing. No dead shrooms to affect your water params, no threat of them coming back, etc.

I had the same issue many years ago -- ended up having to sell of every single rock I had in the tank.

Removing the mushrooms themselves just wasn't an option.

This is how bad some of the rocks were,

Good idea. I have multiple corals on the same rocks with shrooms. I can't keep them out of water too long. Maybe a quick buzz with the dremmel will work.

Todd, mine aren't that bad, yet. I need to get them under control soon though. I will get some pics tonight.

Along with zoas and other polyps. That's why his new home is called "Refugium", in the land of no corals. LOL

You'd be surprised how long coral can be out of the water. I'm not saying you can goof around and do 100 other things while the rock is out, but take your time, do it right, do it once.

And with a dremel and some patience, you can get problem corals off while losing very little actual rock.

Place the star directly on your shrooms and remove it from anything else it wanders onto.

CCS's are slow and easy to remove.

Has anybody had success with a syringe & lemon juice/ vinegar?

I can trade/ sell one rock, but I've got shrooms all over one huge rock that's covered in this awesome yellow sponge that I don't really want to get rid of. I know I'd have to go slowly with removal, but I'm wondering how effective it would be. Already lost one monti frag when a large hermit knocked off the rock and it spent the night face down on a patch of shrooms. :mad2:

WHy fight it? Sell your rock, replacing it rock at a time, and enjoy an influx of new microlife. We sold one that was a good 20 lbs, solid with shrooms.

I agree. As long as noobs are dumb enough to buy mushroom rocks, why kill the golden goose?;)

Hehehe... if you like them, more power to you. I like them too... they don't grow quickly in my tank. However, every person on this forum who hates them, loved them before they exercised manifest destiny.

I'm slowly winning the battle with kalk injections to rid my tank of rhodactis and discosoma shrooms. It's pretty much an every day task to keep hitting them while they're down.

Killing my button polyps (palythoas) is proving more difficult.

Great read. I'm gonna drill my aps too. Thanks Fish. Have you tried the razor method?

From the FWIW department.

I've been working on a patch of shrooms with a syringe & lemon juice. Don't think it did much besides **** 'em off. They're bigger than ever, and it seems like they're popping out little baby shrooms left & right.

So I'd say the lemon juice is a no go. I'm going to try kalk (may clog the syringe) next.
