View Full Version : Filter sock?

I am wondering, are there many pro's to using a filter sock in a sump? Is it necessary? Or just another layer of waste filtration that could otherwise be filtered by a protein skimmer or other media?

I am in the process of building a 55g sump + refugium and debating on whether to modify the design to include a filter sock, and if so, how to do it (or not). I will have 2x1" drain pipes, so I suppose that would mean that if I did modify the design I would either have to have 2 filter socks, or plumb the drain pipes close enough together that the diameter of the filter sock could cover.

Any opinions would be appreciated :)

Thanks!

I had a filter sock on my 95g with a 40g sump/refuge I have my system stocked with copepods I found that the sock would catch a ton of them. I have been running without the sock now for 3 months and my population of bugs has boomed. also I noticed an improvement in my water stability

I put one on when I am cleaning my tank or moving things around just to help catch some of the junk that gets stirred up Other then that I do not use one.

I just use one during water changes or tank maintenance to help pull particulates out of the water. I would design the plumbing so that you can use a sock if you want too.
