View Full Version : a very first blue/green chromis (and one blue reef chromis)?

After reading quite a few posts about chromis, it seems that they would probably kill each other off one by one until they are happy with the number of them in the tank. And it seems like in a 34"x22" tank that I'm setting up, most likely I'll end up with just one chromis. So ...

1. Can I add just one blue/green chromis to the tank? I think yes.
2. But if this one fish is the very first fish of a new tank, would that stress it out since the fish is somewhat a schooling/shoaling fish?
2. Should I still quarantine this very first fish in a separate tank?
3. A month later, I would like to add one blue reef chromis. Will they be okay with each other? Will they think of each other as the same kind and start killing each other?

Thank you.

I've had the opposite experience. From what i can tell, the more you have, the less damage they will actually do to each other because it gets distributed to more than just one. Usually you will still get a weak on die.

I personally think that if a fish is a schooling fish, it should be kept in at least a small school.

As for the mixing chromis, i doubt you'll have problems but i've never done that.

But yes, quarantine them if you have the qt.

x1. The first fish I added were 2 occ clowns. After a couple weeks I added 3 blue green chromis and havnt had a problem with them yet. I would suggest at least 3. Keep it in odd numbers. You can go 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and soforth

i introduced 10 chromis in my 250g, 3 of them died within a week. I now have the 7 left for over 9 months . They are great schooling fish and add lot of movement to your tank. They will eat right out of my hand and its cool to watch them hide in the acros when the light goes off.

three or more on the chromis and the blues will not bother with the greens and vise versa.

I have 7 in my 90. They are great fish to have in there. They are always going a million miles a hour in there and are fun to watch. They have been in there for 4 months now with no problems at all.
