To many snails?

Could there be any ill efects from haveing to many snails in a tank? Could it make your skimmer act up?

if there are too many, there will not be enough food, so a lot of them will die off....

Well I havent seen alot of die off but my skimmer is real foamy lately

could that be a reason why my snails are all dying? or could it be the hermit crabs?
