I am setting up my 90 gallon reef ready again after having it empty for the last few years.

At the moment the drain is right at the water line in the sump and I was wondering if I run a sock with carbon if I should raise it out of the water more or just leave it.

Shouldn't matter IMO. I personally leave it in because there is less splashing and salt spray this way.

I'd be concerned about the carbon...if it's in the water it might be easier for the water to pass around the carbon bag through the sides of the sock rather than getting pulled through the carbon by gravity. You'll still get some benefit, but not as much.

If you weren't trying to push it through carbon I'd agree with the previous poster, I ran my socks half in/half out because of location issues.
