View Full Version : Luckylouse NEW TANK Build Thread

Well, Here I am starting a build thread for a new tank set-up that will replace my first ever tank. Ya, that's right! Prior to March 01, 2009 I've never owned a tank, not fresh water, not salt water. Every pet I've ever owned had 4 legs and fur. In February of 2009 my wife and I decided to investigate the salt water aquarium topic and see what it would take to get involved in the hobby. Of course I just wanted to make sure I did it right from the get go.
I had made my mind originally to get a Red Sea Max 130D but I couldn't find one anywhere so I search, and searched and searched until I came across a nice quaint store in Oakville Ontario called Oakville Reef Gallery. I'm still thankful I walked into their store when I did. After speaking with Tom and his right hand man Joe I decided that a 90 Gallon was right for me. ( Actually Tom said 120G but I didn't want to listen.... lol). So off I went gathering quality used items and some core NEW products to build my 90 Gallon tank. KEEP IN MIND.... Before this date I've never even owned a gold fish!!!! At this point I'm really nervous but at the same time excited about my new hobby.
Here are a few pictures of my current tank which was set-up February 2010 from scratch. Most of the hardware and corals came from ORG ( Oakville Reef Gallery).

This was the initial set-up
102804

This is the same tank.. A picture I took today. ( I haven't had much time to clean the glass so it pretty dirty. Building my new stand and trying to keep up with my 3 year old is killing me!).
102806

And here's where it all begins........ All over again.....
this morning I just received my new tank from Miracles Aquariums from Ontario Canada.
Here's a picture of Rob my Delivery man!!! An outstanding guy!!! Brought this thing right into my living room. Thanks Rob!!!

102807

This is what he left behind.

102808

This is a 52'x26"x23" 3 sided Starphire with Coast to Coast external overflow.:celeb2:

And this is where it will be resting. I still have to make doors, a few more braces and a floor for my Sump and "stuff". This is made of African Mohogany on the outside and framed with Oak. my next project is a canopy... My wife doesn't like the look of my ATI Powermudule hanging from the ceiling.
102809

Anyways... I have a ton of work to do in these next 3 days. Everything has to go from Tank A to Tank B on Sunday... so.... I have to get to work!!!!

Look good. What type of overflow/stand pipe are you going with?

Luckylouse
02/26/2010, 12:46 PM
3 x Durso and 1 emergency drain, all 3 are 1.5". Then i have 2 1" returns which will be fed through a Red Dragon 6.5.

Beautiful tank! A 90gal is a nice size for a beginner to start with - big enough that the system tends to remain stable, not so big that it can get away from you.

Spend as much time as you can spare reading the forums here. Especially the Reef Discussion, Chemistry, and Light, Filtration and Other Equipment forums. And take it slow. Don't let the project run away with you.

Since you've planned on three overflow pipes, take a look at my build thread where I describe (with pics) my overflow. The system I used (started by Herbie and perfected by BeanAnimal), is absolutely silent and really safe - which can't really be said about the Durso. The Durso is fine. I use it myself for my frag and fuge tanks, but the Herbie/BeanAnimal system is better.

GlassReef. I'm all set with Filtration (BubbleKing180), Lights- (I'm a huge T-5 fan so I picked an 8 bulb ATI Power Module) and the entire system is controlled via a Profilux 3 controller with 3 pump Profilux doser which is running the Balling systems. As for the Overflow box; The BeanAnimal is exactly what I'm shoot for, that's what I'll be doing. Did you only control the flow on the main Standpipe or do you recommend getting a valve for the second Standpipe also.

Thanks D2mini. That means alot!! I did take a look at your Cube too. A cube just didn't fit my room properly. Honestly, this tank will 32" from the back wall so it's already pretty far out. My plan it to eventually run the pumps from a basement sump and run a secondary tank there also.

Big day tomorrow. I just finished with my last coat of PolyUrethane on the stand ( I still neeed doors and a few trim components but the frame is complete).
Now it's time fro the big Change over!!!! I'm getting nervous.
I was looking everywhere for FIJI Pink Sand but I can't find it anywhere. I was going to use Aragonite for the bottom layer and add the Fiji pink next week. CAN THIS BE DONE??? or should I just fill the tank the tank with Aragonite.
With regards to the FIJI Pink, I'm just nervous the the 2 MP 40s will blow this stuff around too much, I do like the look of the FIJI Pink though. It's my fave.

Did you only control the flow on the main Standpipe or do you recommend getting a valve for the second Standpipe also. No, just the full siphon pipe needs a valve. I would recommend a gate valve, if you have room. I used a ball valve and regret it. It's more than usable, but but a gate valve would have been easier to adjust.

Too late.Ball valve in place. I'm dealing with HUGE plumbing issues. I just figured out my Bulkhead issue but now I have 3 leaky threaded fitting coming from those bulkheads. I have no clue why. I used Teflon and tighten big time. No Clue what to do now.

What about some Silicone in the threads? I know this is a last resort kind of situation, but I'm running out of options. I have $$thousands in Corals sitting in a Temporary tank! I need to get things in to the new set-up asap.

Lol. I got most of my input from Reef Central and My LFS. This project is consuming me. I actually contemplated throwing in the towel today. All over 3 hayward bulkheads. Gold fish sounds pretty good right now.

Ok. Figured all the plumbing out. The problem was one of the threaded pipe seem to be undersized foe some reason. I switched to Ipex fitting and everything worked out. It was never the Bulkheads this entire time! I'm back on track... Everything is getting hooked up and transfered tomorrow. I currently have my skimmer in the tank to get rid of any nastties in my aragonite. Big day tomorrow.

Some Pictures from start to present.

Picture of holding tank. Just another 90 Gallon sitting on the floor. I so thankful I went thie route. Without the tank it would have made the exchange impossible!

Would a yellow or Purple Tang do ok in this set-up? I currently have a Sail- Fin and a Blue Tang. The Blue is docile the Sail Fin is a little pushy.

Thoughts? I need to start to add some unique fish... ANY SUGGESTIONS? Please keep in mind on building this tank toward Acan and SPS dominant.

I think 2 tangs is probably enough in your tank, especially with the sailfin. How about a shoal of smaller fish: Anthias, Cardinals or Chromis?

Tank look great btw. I love those coast to coast overflows.

Luckylouse
03/07/2010, 10:46 PM
Thanks man. Ya, I really should take the Sail fin out.He is so good at taking care of my Bubble Algae issue.
I currently have 3 Bartlett Anthias, 4 Cromis, 1 Fire Goby, 1 Manderine Goby 1 Watchmen goby along with the 2 Tangs. I have too much flow for any Cardinals.

D2mini,

Thanks! It's not a rimless though. I didn't want to go that route that's why I went with a unique size. This way thje bracing doesn't get in the way of the light at all. You can't really tell but the opening at the top of the tank is the exact size my ATI Fixture. I call this Style of Tank a Slim Euro Brace tank. It's meant to look very, very clean without any plastic guards and all clear silicone.

Tagging along..

I agree with what was already said.. if you want a different tang you should probably trade one in.

The tank looks great.. you really have a knack for stacking those rocks just right!

Strawberry Short cakes is what I was told. Names don't really mean much. It's an Aussie SPS I picked up 2 weeks ago and i love it. It was stressed when I bought it and it went right into the new tank and it's doing very, very well.

Thanks, I really appreciate it! A ton of thought went into the the design. i'm glad it worked out. I should have went with MP20s though. I have a Red Dragon pump putting out 1700 GPH so I have to turn the MP40s turned down to 3/4 max on Lagoon setting. I can't seem to get the perfect setting. It does work though, I think I just have to keep tinkering. I have to get the sweet spot so that LPS and SPS thrive. If i had straight up SPS it would be easy! LPS like a little bit of calm flow. Too much flow stresses them out.

Really Nice tank and aquaspace ! :D

I was wondering, are you using a simu-l spot ?? If so how do you like it ? And is it enough coverage for your tank ?

Thank you

Alex,
First of all thanks for the compliments.
Yes I am using the Simu Spot. i think 2 spots would balance it off much better. All it really does is light the tank at light so that the fish and other companions are happy. The light really makes a difference IMO. I would consider the Simu Stick vs the spot. I went with the Spot because i didn't have the room for the stick.
If you go with the spot 1 light for a 90 Gal is really pushing it. Any larger than 90gal should use 2 of them

Under the hood!!!!

ok, under the tank. Under the hood sounds so much better!

Full area under the hood. Some stuff is a little difficult to identify.
1. Bubble King 180
2. Behind the King is a little fishy reactor that houses 500grams of the Biopellets. This is running via a Maxijet 1200 ( soon to be upgrades.... read on)
3. Profilux Dosing system being run by a Profilux 3 EX.
4 . BRS Canister with ROwaphos ( Not happy with this little guy). It doesn't always seal right.
5. To the Far right.. my return pump. Red Dragon 6.5. I only have 1 return going right now... i'm still working on my manifold... read on to further info.
106673

The Lights!!! I had these extra LEDS kicking around from my last sump so I found a VERY good use for them! I've got them going on a timer so they are on from 7pm to 5 am. Hopefully I'll be able to grow a little Cheato in my sump and also get my PH stabilized at night.
106674

This my Doser and Dosing canisters. These things look alot better than 1 Gallon jugs but they were pricey.
106675

Here's the new manifold I'm working on installing. This will allow me to run 2 return lines to the display and allow me to run 1 maybe 2 reactors off of my work horse return pump.... NOW you know why I was running a 1600 GPH pump in my 150 Gallon Tank!

Awesome build. I've been following along for a bit. I'm also looking at getting a Miracles Aquarium (120g 48x24x24) with external overflow and 3 x 1.5" drain bulkheads. I'm wondering if you have any feedback on the tank. How's the construction quality? How do you like the overflow and weir teeth designs? Is the water flow good? Is it quiet flowing over the teeth and into the box and did you get the BeanAnimal overflow tuned easily? Finally, may I inquire as to cost of your custom tank from Miracles?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks.

Thanks! The Scoly did great for the first 3 days and now it's struggling a little. Not sure why. I hasn't opened up in a few days???

As for the sand... Carib-Sea Aragonite. SeaFlor Special. I has to use something with weight to it because the MP40s are sooo powerful. I would recommend this stuff for look and for functionality. Anything light with my flow and it would be sandstorm hell.

I would recommend Miracles, they made me a solid tank. Corners are square and the seams are very, very clean. Make sure you call a reputable Store like ORG to make sure they can follow up with your tank build. I went with a Big Al's in Hamilton and I really regret it. They added zero value to the transaction. IMO... They are absolutely useless!!!
My drain is similar to the Bean Animal but not as complex, I give him all of the credit for my drain build but I made a few tweeks. It runs 100% silent. The surface skimming is effective with the caost to coast overflow and the overall flow in the tank is effective because of my equipment. The return pump and MP40s perform well. IMO I could have went with MP20s in my design. I have to dial down the MP40s with the way I have them set-up. As for the cost... I don't like to remind myself... This was a custom tank... a standard 120gal size would be cheaper than what I paid. I can tell you that the Tank alone was under $2,500. I'm sure for those that have built custom tanks can tell you that is a good price. A tank like this usually runs upwards of $3k

ATI - Actinics - 22K
ATI- Blue Plus
KZ - Figi Pink
UVL - 14k Special
ATI- Blue Plus
ATI- Blue Plus
ATI- Blue Plus
ATI- Blue Plus

I might be inclined to switch the Actinic to VLue Plus. I have a little too much purple in the front.

So. while I was is a big rush to get the tank running I only hooked up the first of 2 returns so I still had to hook up the second one. When I first decided on the plumbing and return pump I wanted to make in run efficient.
I wanted to key in on reducing power consumption and removed as much electrical power leak into the tank. Thanks to high quality equipment I am happy to report success. I now have 2 returns and 1 very large reactor being supplied by a single water pump. In fact, I still had to turn the returns and reactor down. This is great news because I can now hook up a second small reactor for RowaPhos.

Today is a big day!!!! 1 step closer to completion.

This is a before shot of the sump. Notice behind the Skimmer you'll see a Little Fishy 150 reactor that is housing NP Bio Pellets.
Notice in the refuge area ( not a really a refuge) you can see 2 Maxijets and a reactor.... What a mess!!!

Here's the new plumbing... Note where the blue is located the plumbing continues to a Vertex Reactor. This is all connected to the Red Dragon 6.5.

Here's the new set-up under the tank. The only thing to do functionality is the auto top-off.

Jon, PM'ed you.

Good gear give you great success. I've been doing this for a mere 13 months. I've been to many reefers homes and heard so many stories of hobbyist re-doing everything because the tried saving a few dollars. I've seen reefs that look like hell and I'm not interested in that. IMO, The beauty of the tank can be tarnished with the look of the set-up. They are both very important to me.

Jon, When you coming up for a visit?

Luckylouse,
Awesome build, beautiful tank (both empty and full) and great thread! Following along for ideas/inspiration for my pending 90G build.

You seem to be happy with both Vortechs on the back along with pretty strong flow from your return. My tank will have similar overflow and dimensions to yours except shorter end to end (36") and I was thinking of placing 2 MP10s (I already had them) in similar position along with significant return flow (using a Reeflo Dart from a remote sump about 12 feet away) split between one Y'ed LocLine return and a Vertex MOcean 2000. Based on your comments about the MP40's being too strong, do you think I will be okay with the MP10's? I am hoping this is the ONE place where I can save a few $$ by not having to buy something new!

Also, did I see that you said you weren't happy with your BRS reactor? I literally just had mine delivered yesterday - haven't even unpacked it yet - and you have me a little concerned.

Finally, I know you already had the rock, but do you remember how much you have in there and where it came from? It looks like fewer big pieces versus the typical conglomeration. Your aquascaping is wicked!

Perched Urchin,

Thanks for the reply. The rock is Tongan Fusion and it cost me a pretty penny but IMO it was worth it. They are very large pieces and they are very light. Typical FIJI stuff is about 1 1/2 times the weight over volume. I used Fiji as base rock then the good stuff on top. I think I have about 100 lbs or so. i'm sure I would be fine with much less.

As for the MP10s. I think you will be ok here. A typical 90 is 18" front to Back. Mine is 26". I have mine cracked back 1/2 strength usually... unless I really want to shake things up. Which I do 2/3 times for an hour or so every week. I think you may be good here for sure. If anything you may need to add a small pump in the middle of the tank.

The BRS canister clogs very easily and under pressure and shoot water out of the side. It has a potential to make a big mess. I would be ok to run with a low volume pump. NOTHING MORE THAN A MAXI 900. Maxi 700 would be perfect.

As for my aquascaping.... I was very lucky... I put things together quickly and it just workered out. :).

Good luck with your set-up! The dart is good pump.. If you want to save on your Energy bill though, consider the Red dragon 4.5

Luckylouse,
My tank will be 24" front to back as well - kind of a "brick" at 36x24x24- so that is why I was wondering about the effectiveness of the MP10s.

On the BRS, I was planning on coming off my manifold from my return, reducing to the 1/2" poly tubing and incorporating a ball valve in the feed so I can contol the flow to the reactor. Actually, I am putting gate valves on all the manifold outputs, so I will be able to valve back the flow there first, then tune with the 1/2" ball valve. Think that might fix the problem? I sure haven't heard of other problems with the reactors when I was researching before my purchase.

Luckylouse
03/31/2010, 10:45 PM
Ball Valve is a great idea. You should be ok there. 24" depth is going to be pushing it though for your MP10s. I love that dimension by the way. That is a great dimension! Good luck.

I typically like most things from BRS, but have similar experience with leaking from the 1/2 murlock fittings on their reactors. Mine eventually stopped continually leaking but I do see occasional salt keep which tells me it has not stopped completly. For that reason I intalled it suspended over the sump as I do not trust it. I have no problems with it clogging with the np-biopellets as I replaced the sponges with insterts cut from "plastic canvas"

Tank looks great!

Jkeg, Thanks for the compliments. This was my first attempt any type of furniture in fact. i was not happy with the quality of stand in any local store and the 2x4 build IMO just didn't cut it. I wanted something special so I took my time and decided to do it right.

This is my first version. The only difference is the face of the stand is thicker and the corners sit on a larger horizontal piece on the bottom. I found this adds more strength. This drawing should give you a decent idea if you can decipher it.

Ca - 500+
Mg- 460
Alk - 5.5 ???

??? Not sure why things are growing well under these conditions. I've adjusted my dosing so I'll be back in track in 2 weeks. SPS are starting to sting each other as they fight for space. I'm going to start trimming a few very soon.

Cool Darryl. I didn't check the ALk with another kit. Maybe I'll bring in a sample to Org for testing. Honestly since reducing the the Ca dosing and increasing the Alk slowly I'm already seeing results in my Acans. They've puffed up a little and look happy. I don't think it's the test kit but it's still worth checking. As for the swap... Le's do it. I have 2 Colonies that didn't come up in the picture that I know you'll want frags from. I paid a few bucks for them and they are dynamite! Thanks again for your advice. Following advice from experienced trustworthy reefers is how I got here in the first place. Well I don't have tons of room for frags but for trades I was thinking my yellow a.carolinia for strawberry shortcake. The carolinia is really a stunning and favorite in my tank right now. Glowing yellow. I know you have seen this pic before but...
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/dvanacker/200g/SEPT2010/P9212191.jpg

If you want to trade some others I have a pink millepora, a red millepora, a pink stylopora, a.granulosa, a green tort w/tips that are yellow and a blue tip a.nana that are significant enough in size to frag. Other than that all my best are still babies and toddlers. I could get you a frag of monti that is next to the a.carolinia.

Oh how is your echinata growing? I realize its probably still small but I could get you a frag (of my frag :))of ORA hawkins echinata (not really echinata) for a trade if you are interested.

Thanks again for your advice. Following advice from experienced trustworthy reefers is how I got here in the first place. I'm not about to change that habit!

Darryl, Thanks again!

Ya, Let's do the A.Carolinia for the Strawberry. The Echinata is not doing very well. I'm afraid I'm losing it. I tampered with it a little too much while getting it in the proper location and Algae is stating to grow on some of the branches. If I disturb it anymore I'll lose it for sure. I'm crossing my fingers that it comes back but I really doubt that will happen. It was stressed when I bought too, that why it cost me VERY little.

As for the strawberry.. I'll have a very nice frag for you.., about 2".
