I'm a newb building a canopy and so far it's coming out nice.

I'm using wood glue to cement the wood along with screws. I'm worried that when it comes to staining/painting the canopy the wood glue will not allow me to do so on the edges where the wood glue was applied. Will this be a problem?

Yep. You will need to sand the glue so you can stain the wood.

Some of the glue is stain-able but will still show a bit when done but would say most others are not. Best bet is wipe it off with a towel as you go and it makes for a better finish in the end. I wiped all my glue off with a slightly damp cloth as I went and had no issues in the end

Right, after applying the glue to the edges I always wiped off but there's always a very thin layer of glue left. Will this still be very noticeable?

if you have excess wood glue, it'll stain, but thinly...

just sand the excess off?

You could try and lightly sand it with a flat edged sander as to not round off the edges of the finished work. If any of the wood is laminated be careful not to sand too much and damage the wood finish.

There are 3 ways you can deal with the glue

1. wipe off with a damp towel
2. wait one hour after the glue is applied and scrape it off while it is still pliable but not gooey (this is what i do and it has worked for my for over 10 years.
3. wait tell it is completely dry and scrape and sand it off. (this is the hardest to do though)

You will still need to sand with 150 then 300 grit paper to get that nice and smooth finish look. If you are going to go get a sander get a Random Orbital Sander not just and orbital sander.

Thanks, I'll sand it lightly.

I noticed that there is "pre-stain" paints available. Is it worth it? Or should I just stain directly?
