I just put a two little fishies sock from GFO on the end of the pipe. Mines more for bubble control though. It still picks up alot of crap even though it's not very fine

I can't quite tell where your drain is but put a sock on the overflow as long as you are willing to change it out every few days and keep it as far away from the intake of the return pump as possible. My drain is on one end and my return is on the opposite end with the intake diagonal to the drain. No baffles on mine.

Shop vacs work awesome for cleaning sumps. Got a 12 gallon vac at walmart for $40.
