My voltage is reading 3 volts with everything on, is this too much?

what are your reference points? water to GND?

3 should be fine. I have around 12 and have for the last year or so and have no problems. I do have a grounding probe and run tank on a gfi circuit.

Ok, I just checked it again, and it's actually 5 volts. It was 27 volts, and I discovered the problem was a bad powerhead, and now it's down to 5, but I was wondering if that's too high. I have heard good things and bad things about grounding probes, so I don't use one.

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean, I'm not so good with electricity or lingo for that matter?

We're assuming you're using a multimeter to read the voltage, where/to what do you have your points connected?

one to the ground in the outlet and one to the water in the sump.
