i just replied to a post telling a fellow reefer about my old 90gal reef that was lit by 4 normal output t-12s for about a year,,,all of my soft corals did very well back then. nowadays my tank is half that size at 45gallons and i run 2-150w hqis and 2 65w cpfs,,,thats 370 more watts or about 2.6 times the light output on a tank half the size!!!! i still only have softies and lps except for one green apple sps coral. so i was just thinking for my next softy/lps reef maybe i dont need so many watts of light? maybe i can spend the money on more of a quality fixture vs a hi wattage/hi heat hqi fixture? what say you? just what could you get away with on a 60ish gallon 20" deep softy/lps reef?(my next tank)
