View Full Version : Upgrade to 90 gallon build

Well I am in the process of setting up my new 90 gallon. I started w/ a 48, then to a 75 and now the 90. I've done lots of this stuff myself because I was laid off of my job the monday after I bought my 1st fish following a lengthy 2 mo. cycle. My experience has been one of patience and lots of DIY. Well here's the pics.
1st full tank shot of my 48

http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n131/jorgemere_2006/DSC_0026.jpg?t=1268097852
As you can see I started with all base rock. Probably why it took so long to cycle.

Upgrade to 75

Made my own little in tank refuge for pods. Made it out of acrylic

One of my favorite fish but I traded him in

for this
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n131/jorgemere_2006/DSC_0285.jpg?t=1268098367
Too big for a 4' tank though.
I then got my 1st real marine fish light. 260w Coralife PCs w/ lunar lights. I also added my own homemade refugium. Made it out of a 30 gal and added acrylic baffles
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n131/jorgemere_2006/DSC_0278.jpg?t=1268098565
Coraline really started taking off. Also decided to change the background color. Also added 2 Koralia 3s

I want to stain a really dark color, almost cherry. Not sure about background this time around. Any ideas?

in my opinion Red Oak is my favorite color to stain stuff. HAHA its not really dark but super pretty. Im not sure why you didn't like your original background color. I like the blue backround over the black because it make it seem more "happy". BTW $50 for that tank is a steal, Holy $hit.

Maybe not the best idea to fill it with water on just two 2x4's. Thats putting a lot of weight on those two pressure point.

I have a 90 too so good luck, here is my stand with the stain color i was talking about:

usually you stain once and varnish 2-4 times sanding in between coats. it might be a different type of stain though with water protectant in it for fences and stuff.

Well I actually liked the way the stand came out. We decided to leave the doors the original color . Doesn't look bad but just not sure yet. I still have another stand to pick up on Sat. That one is particle board though, it had a little water damage on one of the sides along the bottom, so I don't know if I can just replace the panel. Anyone have any ideas on this? Also I just started the plumbing. Wondering if I should replace the bulkheads and put new ones on. I think they were siliconed on the inside.

Yeaaah I'm not liking it either. My wife loves it though. I also have an Oceanic stand that I could use but its particle board and has a little water damage along the bottom on one of the sides. I've been thinking about replacing the piece but I don't know where to get the paper laminate to match the design.
As far as the background I just haven't gotten to painting it yet but I'm def. painting it. But go figure my wife likes it the way it is.

Looking good so far! In my opinion, whatever makes the wife happy, will make us happy. Especially when returning from a coral shopping spree!
Def paint the back black. I did that to mine and WOW what a difference! It brings up all the colors in the tank! And keep going with the pics!

Looks good I got myself a 90 gallon as well but I also got a 40 and a 20 and a light fixture all for 75 dollars and they were brand new... now that sir is the deal of the century :D... Tank is looking good so far... are you going to do a herbie system?

IMO I'd lose the two tone as well, I do trim a different color some times but not something as big and noticeable as the doors. Good luck with the build.

When you added the MH did you notice your corraline recede? Gorgeous tank BTW.Yes it did, for about a month, but it came back by adding calcium. The rocks closest to the water started turning white. I added some purple up and literally in about 4-5 days the white was almost all gone. Now everything is purple again.

You're absolutely right. I built one of those netted screen tops and it worked w/ my pearly the second day. Glad I did some research ahead of time. I lost a really cool lawnmower blenny after almost a year in my tank. One morning he woke up on the tile.:sad2:

Well change in plans. I picked up the 2nd stand and Its very well built. I'm going to replace one of the sides and do a light sand and varnish. For whatever reason only the sides are compressed wood. One side had water damage and it swelled up. So a little delay but I can knock it out this weekend and then time to transfer it all in. No more two tone:lol::lol:

Did you witness this happen because it sounds like it would have been funny to watch. What did he say when you asked him why he decided to feed your fuge?Well he is only 2, almost 3 yrs old and I was so mad that I just told him to sit on the couch. Then he says " Daddy can I help" I said no I got it this time buddy. He didn't know he did anything wrong, but he knew he was in trouble. My mom was over visiting so she sat down w/ him and watched him while I cleaned up the mess.
Finally the water cleared up this A.M. Water parameters are great so far. The anemone was looking rough yesterday but today its finally open and full. My frogspawn and some of my mushrooms are still not fully opening but I'm just going to wait and see.

I should be ordering my Tek light 8x54 on Monday. Just trying to decide if I should spend the extra $ for the Elite.

maroon2
04/06/2010, 07:31 AM
Well now I'm wondering if maybe the ATI sunpower 6x54 would be better than the Tek elite 8x54. As per sunlight supply their new fixtures have
"New 98% reflective European aluminum reflectors increase output by over 300%. Active air cooling for optimum lamp performance. Includes acrylic shield"
Also the 8 bulb fixture is cheaper by a couple bucks than the sunpower 6 bulb. But I've read so many great things about the ATI, that I thought maybe the 6 bulb would still be better. So because of price I'm between the Tek elite 8 bulb or the ATI sunpower 6 bulb.

Sounds like you should win either way but IDK really you still have to buy bulbs as well dont you from what I remember they don't inculde them with the purchase of the fixture.

maroon2
04/06/2010, 02:20 PM

That nova setup sounds good but the ATI and TEK would be some good quality though if you have the money to spend go with the other two I think. I went Nova because it was the cheapest best budget freindly light I could find.

Dont have many corals yet but part of me thinks I have almost to much light as i get next to no coraline growth and have herd to much light can be a factor. I actually bought the 6 bulb fixture as a bit of an overkill incase I upgrade to a 120.

I have a 500 Watt MH on a 55 gallon, with a ton of coraline algae growth. What are your other water parameters?

04/07/2010, 09:37 AM
I'm running 608 watts total between metal halides and T5s. You may be low on calcium. Then again I can't get mine any higher than 280:sad2:

BTW I'm rally leaning towards the ATI at this point. They have been proven by Grimm reefer's par testing in pg 5 of the nova extreme thread. I just keep wondering how the Tek Elite will compare w/ the new reflectors and fans. Especially w/ the 8 bulb fixture being cheaper than the ATI 6 bulb.

04/07/2010, 12:24 PM
WELL I'LL BE DAMNED. This whole thread has been a lie. I just measured my tank and it urns out its a 75 not a 90. I feel cheated and like an idiot. For some reason it looked bigger to me so I never measured it. Oh well, that changes things a bit I guess. Now I may not need to go w/ an 8 bulb fixture. I think a 6 bulb will do. I also have plenty of skimmer for my set up. Maybe too much. Well sorry everyone. Mods if you can change the title to 75 instead of 90 that would be great.:sad1:

Dont feel too bad I had made that mistake before at least you found out before you had your system up and running unlike me. I have had my 55 gallon for 4 years now and thought it was a 75 gallon for the first 3 years! That made this aquarium a real challange.

maroon2
04/12/2010, 08:06 PM
Oh system is def. up and running, but it looks so good to me that I'm not going to worry about the size. I'll just let it all grow and get that natural look going. Maybe add some fish.

how do you find the tek system works for you? I currently have a 36 inch 4 bulb tekfixture and was hoping to use it on my 90 gallon 48x24x18 (short) system until i can afford an upgrade. Do you think it will be enough light for growing softies?

maroon2
05/20/2010, 12:51 PM
Should be fine. I have the 6x54. Before I had 500w oddyssea mh and a wavepoint 2x54 for actinics. When I added the Tek w/ the Ati bulbs it bleached my mushrooms and my frogspawn just started opening 2 days ago. I'll post up some recent pics later.

Here are the pictures as promised. Returned my pr of GSM clowns to the tank last monday after treating for ick and leaving tank uninhabited for 8 weeks. Lost lots of coraline algae and bleached some mushrooms going from 500w oddyssea mh fixture w/ 108w wavepoint t5 fixture to a teklight 6 bulb w/ Ati bulbs. Go figure.

Aquariums that go for sale have sure a varing resale value the used aquariums that have top of the line items go for pennies on the dollar so since most of the stuff that you have on your system is middle of the road quailty I would think you would be on the lower end... Honestly I think what would be best to do is maybe sell off the livestock and gear but keep the tank and set it up at another time? If you figure by then you should be able to get a killer LED light but right now T5 has a high resale value.

Well I replaced this jawfish w/ a smaller one of the same kind. The larger one had gill damage. The new one has a burrow dug up and eats great.

Thanks, I'm upgrading to either a 120 or 150 this week. Still trying to decide which to go with. They are both 48x24 buth the height is the only problem. The 120 is 24" and the 150 is 30". Just concerned w/ the lighting and skimmer. Mt current equipment is enough for the 120 but I think I might be pushing it w/ the 150.
