View Full Version : AGE Rimless 240g Cube Starfire---[Pacific Reefs]

Due to not having enough time and money to work on my 375g (8'x30"x30") I downgraded last year to a 240g rimless cube from AGE with starfire glass on 3 sides and pvc bottom. The pvc bottom is great for drilling a closed loop or running a bare bottom (neither of which I have done lol). I ended up selling some rock, corals and fish to do the transfer. One of my favorite parts of the stand is the "beer lip." I didn't realize how much I would use that feature even though I'm always worried that someone will scratch the glass with something.

The lighting consists of 1 18.5" hammertone reflector running a 400w Radium bulb and Galaxy ballast combo. I also supplement with actinic VHOs.

The tank has an external overflow and the returns are powered by a Dart with Baldor motor. There is a fuge and I am running a Matrix prototype skimmer. It is a pyramid design that holds more water than your typical cone design.

I plan on adding an ATO system, some type of computer controller, and an automatic dosing system in the future.

The tank has too much rock in it imo and I plan on using some in another 240g cube that I just purchased.

The fish list includes:
Male Blonde Naso
Yellow Eyed Kole tang
2 anthias
porc. puffer (yeah I know crazy right?)
Snowflake Morey
Orange shoulder tang
2 Hippo tangs
Fairy wrasse
another wrasse that I cant remember the name
Pigmy angel

Here are some actinic shots since the main halide already turned off for the day.

Very nice set up, that doesn't look like too much rock.

Very nice dimensions. I agree to open up the tank a bit more by removing some rock. Keep us updated!

The back is crammed with LR that I had from my 375g. I really want to open it up more and use the space. I am also having a little aiptasia battle as well.

great looking tank, loving the rimmless! am a bit envious as i have not received mines yet :)

was wondering what are you using for flow? do u find that there is enough flow to hit the front pane?

would love to see a full tank and stand shot with the lights on!

Honestly I could use more flow. The dart puts out enough to cover the front of the tank. I have a Tunze 6105 set on low that sweeps over the back of the tank. One more 6105 would be good to have them point at each other. I am also considering a wavebox.

I have been busy at work but will try to get pics soon. Thanks!

Looks great man! Did that tank come from someone over by Tampa, or did you buy it new? Either way, it looks great! Sorry not selling the 10'er. This one's going up. Look for a build thread soon, putting up an addition that consists of a new 13'x7' fish room. Tank will sit in wall in the family room!

Yeah I bought it from Brucem near Tampa. You know me I never buy new lol. Where did you score the 10 footer? Was it the guy you were going to help set up his tank?

Nope, his tank has been up and running for over a year. Actually scored it on craigslist. We had to take it out a kitchen window, above the sink, and straight out under a deck that was only 3' off the ground. 2' from the deck was an open water pond. Quite a scene and quite a story! Doesn't matter because it's in the house now!

Wow......sweet setup. I dig the stand. Really makes it capable of hiding everything. Which I like and my wife loves(she would like to hide the tank completly). How long has it been setup? Also nice to see a snowflake in a reef tank. Usually see those in a pred tank or a fowlr. congrats!

WOW! Looks Awesome! That is the first time I've seen a rimless that big. I agree you could make it look more scale by removing some rock. I would have told you to get some peppermint shrimp for that Aptsia issue but that would be a puffer fish and eel appetizer ..:D

If you are looking for a controller, the New Neptune Apex is sweet. It is fully controllably from any internet connection and a remote app for the iphone that graphs (if you use one). Either way it is the best controller I've had.

PS I have a granite beer ledge on my tank and LOVE IT! Great for feeding/cleaning/testing oh and for drinking!

My wife would love to hide the entire tank as well in the street but when company comes over she always shows it off...strange. The tank has been running since Sept I believe. The snowflake I purchased at that Pet Safari place before it closed for around $12. It was just a baby and it is getting pretty big. I was inspired by my friends 55g that had a baby one in it...I didn't realize how fast they grow and how large they get. I'm not sure how much longer I can keep him.

I think I remember seeing a pic of your granite beer ledge...very nice! I really want that Apex controller...I saw someone in tampa selling it new for $420 and I missed out. I will be saving up for one for sure!

Btw I must have saved about $50 a month by running less pumps and lights than my 8' 375g by going with a cube. Also I am probably stretching the halide on the 240g but I keep the less light demanding corals on the bottom closer to the edge of the tank.

How do you keep the porcupine from munching on the corals? One of my favorite puffers and i would keep one in my reef if i could. Very nice looking puffer.

Pacific Reefs
03/15/2010, 04:48 PM
I honestly have never seen him go for any corals. I think the other puffer species are known for that. If I don't keep up on feedings he will go after the hermits or smaller fish.

I can't wait to see it as I'm sure the wait is way overdue for you. There is a unique saltwater cube with an overflow in the middle at SeaWorld's Aquatica...its very cool and they use natural sunlight for the corals and anemones.

So far not yet. He has been with me since he was very small...maybe he hasn't figured it out yet. There still is a decent gap between the water level and the rim.

Yeah the Naso and the puffer crave attention. When I get a chance I will do another with the MH. I have to reset the lighting schedule so it's on when I come home. I was hoping to have a controller by now and and a reason to set it up.

Looking good. I like the rimless look. I have a tank the same dimensions at home and cannot be happier with it. The tank uses a single halide like you are using and it is working pretty well so far.

How do you like your relector? I am using a large lumenbright and have been debating on trying a different one.

I love the reflector. Since the 400w bulb is a little larger than a 250w in length I can get a really good spread with this combo. I just raised the canopy the other day to take advantage of the reflector. Mine is a custom 18.5"x18.5" hammertone material.
