I have two 48" T-5's (10k) and one 250w Metal Halide (10k). I lined my entire hood with some cheap tinfoil and the result was dramatically more light to the tank. You can also see my cheap "Chiller" on the right.

This is what it looks like all lit up.

The previous incarnation of our tank ended up with 2x400W, 1x250W halide plus 170W of T5.

Be careful with the tin foil, it can and most likely will corrode with salt generating a white aluminium oxide (?) powder which can contaminate your tank. You can get reflective mylar material used for photography and hydroponics, better and safer.

OP: You'll get more light in your tank with a Good True white paint than with the foil. I had a college roommate in Ag school who tested several different DIY reflective materials for a senior project. White paint won the competition if you can believe it.

FYI: he was growing several different types of fruit plants indoors using a 400 watt HPS lamp.

No pictures that I can post right now, but I have two LumenMax Elites with 2X250W HQI 15,000K XM's... instead of painting the inside with white paint, I found paint the is a reflective metallic color... looks pretty cool and seems to light up the tank very well (of course, that could just be the LumenMax Elites).

I think you are simply talking about salt build up on the surface, or "saltcreep". Aluminium oxide or corundum which is a vary hard and stable mineral that in one example when formed in a red coloration creates "Ruby's". If that's the case then I won't mine a couple of these stone's dropping in my tank. Anyways, not trying to be a smart a$$. With anything in or around the tank it takes a simple wipe with a damp cloth and whatever residue is gone.
