View Full Version : Skimmer help?

Ok so the whole skimmer thing is new to me and when I bought my 180 it came with a bunch of odds and ends including a skimmer without the pump. It has the air intake and collection cup. I have an old mag 5 and when I hooked it up there seems to be a good amount of bubbles but the water level in the skimmer doesn't seem to push enough to get the bubblesover the inner chamber of the collection cup. Like I said I'm new to skimmers so any help would be great

Is it a Beckett skimmer? If it is you need a pressure rated pump. A mag 5 will not do it. Do you know the brand of the skimmer? If it's not a beckett skimmer, you might just need a bigger pump. A mag 5 seems to small for any skimmer running on a 180 gallon tank.

I wish I knew what brand it was, but it's not marked anywhere. I think it's an older one because the tank is at least 5 years old if not older. And the previous owner didn't really know what he was doing. His fiancÚ's father paid for everything. The skimmer stands 25" tall and has a diameter of 6 1/4". It has a tear drop shape base where the main chamber and the return are at. I tried the mag5 because I already had it laying around. What size pump should I try or how do I find out if it is a beckett?

If you post a picture of it in this thread, I'm sure someone will be able to identify it for you.

Can anyone tell me what kind of skimmer this is?
