30gal AllGlass tank. Local seawater and sand. Dead cured rock. large skimmer, powerheads and a Millennium 1000 HOB. Only have two 1.5" clowns and GBTA with local nems and cleanup crew. If I would add anything else it would be like star polpy frags. So would I benefit from converting a HOB filter into a refugium that grows macro alage. Money is tight so I have a Millennium 2000 HOB filter laying around and a 13watt PC light with reflector. Am also getting a HOB filter through a trade that sounds like its bigger then my 2000 filter. Or would I only benefit from having a Aquaclear 500 or larger filter or a real refugium from online. Just tryin to work with what I have since money is a issue. Thanks

You able to expand on the local seawater? How long has the tank been set up? You ever thought of a planted tank? I've always thought of some type of refugium is better than nothing, so even something with a HOB filter should help.

I live a right down the street from the ocean.Local college pumps ocean water into large tubes and filters it,UV's it and cleans it to make it free and safe for public tank use. Tanks be up for months, not really and food for the marco's I'm sure yet. Cheato grows easy though. Thanks for the reply, nobody ever replies to post on here it seems unless they know the person or they are very active here.

How big is the filter? The general opinion is that you want the fuge to be at least 10% of your total system volume in order to see any real benefit. That being said, if you've got the stuff laying around already, I don't see why you wouldn't/shouldn't do it. It's not going to cost anything, not going to hurt anything, so...

I've used a millenium filter before. I see no reason why you can't turn it into a fuge. Go for it!

Thanks for the replies. A guy wants to trade me he thinks is a aquaclear that is 8 inches long. Anyone have any idea what size that is? Not sure if he means the holding area or the whole thing.

What size Millennium did you use?

Thanks!

There is a DIY thread about turning an aquaclear into a fuge - you should check it out. I think it's on the first page of the nano DIY thread stickied at the top of the forum.

Sugar Magnolia - What size tank did you use the HOB fuge on? Did you see any differences? I guess you only would if you had problems of course.

talked to a guy that has a degree in Marine Biology and he said that small of a fuge on a 30gal would do nothing and would be a waste.
