my tanks have recovered enough since my move in september to warrant cleaning everything up, wiping down the glass and taking a few pictures.

the system is composed of a 60 gallon cube and a 45 gallon cube tied to the same 50 gallon sump. each tank is illuminated by 400w XM 20k bulbs and two 24" T5 actinic + bulbs. each tank has two sea swirls fed from a single reeflo dart. in the 60 gallon, two korallia 4s provide additional flow. an ASM G4 provides the filtration as well as a phosphate reactor and the occasional filter sock. i do 45 gallon water changes every 4 to 6 weeks, sometimes longer. i dose about 5 mL of vodka every morning. i feed mysis, cyclopeeze, formula 1 and 2 flakes and aquadine pellets. three nights a week i also feed phytoplankton, oyster eggs and rotifers.

the 60 gallon houses:
- amphiprion nigripes
- three heteractis magnifica
- ten blue damsels
- five chromis
- two dragon face pipefish
- pink streaked wrasse
- possum wrasse
- two red margined wrasses
- two cleaner shrimp
- two harlequin shrimp
- anemone shrimp
- strawberry crab
- two emerald crabs
- japanese pistol shrimp

the 45 gallon houses:
- amphiprion tricinctus
- heteractis crispa
- harlequin tusk
- flame hawk
- lawnmower blenny
- diamond goby
- crimson tip longfin

as you may or may not be able to tell, i tend to favor my 60 gallon. i plan on packing it with more sps colonies when i find just the right ones. hopefully a few more large staghorns and tables.

when i had two 6 inch a. chrysopterus in the 45 gallon, it just didnt make sense to have any other fish or corals impeding their space. without them however, it seems to me like a lot of empty space i havent yet figured out what to do with yet. im thinking ill make it more of a gorgonian and soft coral tank. however, better ideas are appreciated.

thanks for looking!

Awesome tricinctus. I've only tried a pair of these clownfish once and am very very hesitant to try them again. It is just so hard to find healthy tricinctus.

NICE ROn!

Mags and Nigripes, what more do a reefer wants? :D

Do you protect those reflectors with glass shield? how about salt spray?

PS: Is that Nigripes from SSA?

Ron Popeil
03/16/2010, 09:28 AM
ive been very fortunate with tricinctus out here. the problem i run into is super aggressive and dominant females chasing their males out of the tank.

my reflectors are not protected and for the most part they dont get splashed on. once every few months ill clean them out with some acid and water if they get bad. and no salt spray anywhere to speak of.

unfortunately that is not a SA nigripes. this lone nigripes was from a very generous friend locally who purchased it from somewhere out east. i imagine the mate i get for it though will be from SA...

Yes, thats the one I asked about few days ago. :) Nice to see its still running. Nowadays its mixed reef and if i remember correctly back then it was more like anemone dedicated, right? That aquarium inspired me with dream aquarium Id like to build one day. Something like 3 tanks with inner owerflows to each other and one sump. Still dunno if Id design em as cubes or hexagonal prisms. Cubes are easier to build (and i could possibly use the lighting i already have) but i think prisms would just look better.

2x400w MH sounds like lot of heat. How much water evaporates from it?

Is that a RBTA in the back of the tank with the Tricinctus?

Ron Popeil
03/17/2010, 08:22 PM
oh i still love them dearly. i lost my second breeding pair unexpectedly in september and became very disheartened with their dramatic color loss. im waiting on a dealer who allegedly will be bringing in some yellow tails soon, which in my experience dont lose their yellows as severely as the white tails.

so in the mean time, tricinctus stay nice and brightly colored....and look pretty sweet. i just have to find myself a mate. or pair.

and yes, that is a rose bubble tip hiding back behind the rocks. such keen eyes! it opens to about 10 inches or during the day.

05/11/2010, 01:18 PM
i took some pictures and a few unedited videos this morning. my camera certainly is not as nice as my friends, and the quality shows. likewise, i did a quick white balance experiment with my camera to equal out some of the blue since im running a radium on the 60 and an XM 20k on the 45....with two 454 actic T5s per tank.

my temp runs between 78 and 82 degrees. thanks for looking!

Thanks for the updates! Looks sick. How do all those damsels get along?

Ron Popeil
05/12/2010, 12:03 PM
i received the nigripes from a friend who did a mail order from somewhere out east. i dont recall where though. i should find out.

the damsels do chase and harass each other, but the more there are the less they do. there are blue damsels, kupang damsels, chromis and goldbelly damsels. they really added the color and movement i wanted out of my tank. initially i wanted a swarm of cardinals of some sort but they would have been far more expensive and harder to find locally.

velvetelvis

I still love the unique aquascaping in the 45. It's very dynamic and actually makes the tank look bigger than it is. What kind of gorgonian is that?

Ron Popeil
12/28/2010, 12:39 PM
i received one nigripes from a very generous winwood, the other i crossed my fingers and rolled the dice and ordered from bluezoo. fortunately it worked out to be a male and they were spawning within two weeks i believe.

although i did order 5 nigripes from SA and attempted a harem...only to find the most dominant nigripes obliterated the other four. they were super healthy and wonderful though. so i broke them into pairs in a partitioned 29 gallon QT set up with some copper and within 12 hours they all perished. i had even gone light on the copper. i was baffled and saddened.

the tricinctus i picked up for $19 bucks from a local store, it had a huge red sore on its disfigured jaw and was labeled as a sebae clown. it was the first one id seen in months...and havent seen another one in over a year.

thank you sonofgaladriel. i do feel very fortunate that good mags come in fairly often in my parts. i currently have six and hope to begin attempting some form of aquaculturing them shortly.

velvetelvis...the gorgonian is a purple whip as far as i know. theyre bullet proof. its survived for years and endured all sorts of catastrophe. for years the anemone didnt grow much. but currently the crispa has consumed the entire aquarium and is now the only thing visible for the most part. ill get an updated picture shortly.

Jordan,
It's Kyle from down in Corvallis! Your tank looks awesome. Hey you mentioned doing some aquaculture on your anemones. I've been doing rose anemones successfully for about a year now, you should give me a call, I'd love to discuss it further with you if your interested (I can definitely tell you what WONT work, at the very least), Colt has my number. Have a good one, and sorry for derailing your thread!

Ron Popeil
04/27/2011, 11:24 AM
well some things have changed since the last pictures were posted. after nearly 5 months of unexplainable SPS death and losing nearly all of them, i made some upgrades. i replaced my modified recirc ASM G4 with a bubble blaster reef octopus 3000 internal. i switched out my dual 400w magnetic ballasts for electronic 400w/250w select a watt ballasts and put the 45 gallon under a 250w bulb. i got rid of the three korallia evo 4s i had in the 60 gallon and put in an MP40 vortech. i also took off my recently non functioning 1" sea swirls and replaced them with some pvc and loc line. i also removed all but two of the magnificas, keeping the purple based and rusty red based one.

so much more flow now. so much better light. and a more open tank. lots of new corals. as soon as i replaced the ballasts, the sps started growing again. much to my delight. i also put a 10k bulb over the 45 gallon and its made the color of the anemone just incredible, the 60 has a 400w radium.

the tricinctus are most difficult to photograph because theyre always chasing the damsels or deep within the anemone. what i found fascinating about this species is the color change of the male. when it was introduced it looked identical to the female with some brown and black throughout the back of the fish. now the fish is almost completely yellow. i really like it! im feeding them a ton because i would love to see them spawn soon....

i got rid of the three korallia evo 4s i had in the 60 gallon and put in an MP40 vortech.

What's your plan for keeping your mag out of your new Vortech? Mine recently blundered into my MP40 and I had to use scissors to get it out. Amazingly enough is has made what looks like a full recovery but I darn sure don't want it to happen again.

Ron Popeil
04/30/2011, 11:51 AM
i dont tend to have problems with my magnificas moving. as a safeguard though, the rock the anemones are on is shaped like a tall pillar. it would have to crawl down nearly 20 inches of rock, over a few inches of sand and then back up the glass to get attacked by the vortech.

keeping my rockwork off the glass, my pumps out of the way and centering my mags in the middle of the light and water motion seem to keep them quite stationary. you could also use the sponge cover that came with your vortech, although i imagine it would clog up quickly with unsightly detritus.

SkullV
04/30/2011, 12:21 PM
Man that is one overstocked 60g! It looks awesome though, you must do a ton of water changes to keep up with the load on both of those tanks. Do you do any carbon dosing to keep the coral happy?

Ron Popeil
04/30/2011, 12:38 PM
thank you!
i usually do a 44 gallon water change every six weeks. in the mean time, i dose 15mL or so of biofuel every day. i used to test for phosphates every week. but havent done so in almost two months. never have any nitrates, and surprisingly the phosphates have stayed remarkably low.

just a quick update to my system. the corals have essentially taken over the tank. i am hoping to get in there and prune back heavily...maybe even cram in some new colonies.

the nigripes ive had in there were doing well...until about two months ago when i lost one of them unexpectedly. very disheartened.

the tricinctus i am feeding heavily, removed all the damsels from their tank, and am hoping to get them to start spawning soon.

Nice tri's. i been feeding mine heavy to so they might try to spawn as well. mine dont spent to much time in my rbta they have. they play in the mp10 stream with the midas. mine are decent size like yours and mine are about the same shade as your female.

as for doing a redo for your tank i wold swap at the nem. kinda taking over the whole tank. hehe
mine are in my solana and i have them and the nem in a cave and they love to go in and out of it.

In the tricinctus tank, what about getting some magnets and then gluing some frags to them and place them on the back. It might look pretty sweet with a backdrop of scrolling montiporas or something like that. Either that or just let some xenia go wild in there.

Hey off topic but is that real thick stag in the middle of them all A. robusta? I have a frag of what I believe is robusta and am wondering what color it is going to turn out to be. So far it's turned from a brown piece to a real foresty green one.

minh, around the beginning of this thread i believe there were four magnificas in this tank. i removed two, but the purple based one has been with me since the beginning.

at the beginning of this thread, the lighting for this system was a 400w radium. then in may of last year i switched to two AI Sols. i ran these for over a year before reverting back to a 250w radium. no real issues with the LEDs, growth was good. color was satisfactory. but i think i am much more satisfied with the halide.

i just need a few more choice SPS colonies and i will return to be satisfied with the look of the 60 gallon. as for the 45 gallon, now that the tricinctus are spawning, i wont make any more changes in their tank. my goal however, since the crispa is so incredibly large, is to introduce their fry once they are several months old back into this tank. i think the anemone is big enough and the parents mild enough that they could hide effectively but still be a part of the biotope. fingers crossed.

OrionN
08/21/2013, 11:50 AM
I am doing the same. My Gigantea are so huge that adding 6 babies back into the tank is Ok. The parent chase them around a littel but with 6 of them, there no real injury

Still drooling over that crispa. I have one that was a rescue from almost two years ago. I like them as much, possibly more than my mags. Just love all the mop of tentacles they have. Mine is the tannish gray. Would love to have a colorful one like yours. I read an earlier post where it can reach across your 24 inch tank. That's fantastic. If I had that tank I would keep it as it is forever. It will look stunning with a grouping of tricinctus. Looking forward to future pics.

Ron Popeil
10/08/2013, 11:24 AM
thanks gary! they do have all the quintessential elements we demand of our clownfish anemones. in my opinion, a large healthy crispa, particularly the tannish gray ones, look great with a bright yellow clarkii complex clown in it. one of the nicest combos.

ill try to get some pictures of it when its fully outstretched. that way it will hide all the algae i suddenly have growing in that tank....

Hi Ron i love those Nigripes, i remember years back when you attempt to buy like a dozen of them wild caught and hope they survive and breed them? today we can get them captive breed which eliminates possibility of wild caught with the dreadfull brooks....etc... i remember i see a pair at Petco not long ago and they were there for a long time. most people dont find them interesting but for me they are my favorite.

i do like me some nigripes as well. i would still like to try out a swarm of them, but i would need only young juveniles. once there is an established female, the entire aquarium becomes a ghost town.

i currently have a sustainable aquatics female and a wild caught male nigripes.

thanks deepsea! fortunately, its been a very tough anemone....

here are some updated pictures of the 60 gallon portion of this system. the colors are a bit misleading, the magnifica is not blue...it is actually purple. i need to get a better picture editing app on my phone....strangely enough, the chrysogasters will only go into the magnifica on the left, this is interesting because it was listed as an "african ritteri", but really, this is unverifiable. but one would think they wouldnt have a preference, if anything they should choose the larger of the two anemones to enjoy.

thanks colt!

i decided i wanted my display to hold all of my favorite things. so the nigripes are in the garage system, and the chrysogasters get the main stage.

I figured. Are they behaving themselves in the mags?

where the nigripes would hardly leave the magnificas, the chrysogasters are much more confident. but like i mentioned earlier, they refuse to have anything to do with the purple magnifica which i find really interesting.

That is very odd indeed. Maybe that's a good reason to move your purple one in with the nigripes then.

pinkskunk the tank on the left is 24 x 24 x 24
