What's the best way to break a large rock that has some corals (mostly soft) living on it? All that's coming to mind is taking a flathead screwdriver and a hammer to it...curious if there is a better way.

tile saw if you want to do it carefully, but a hammer and chisel works to

a hammer and a chisel worked well for me. place something underneath to catch all the rubble rock (a plastic bag, a ruubermaid lid, etc...)

I had a geologist's hammer hanging around and used it to break some marco rocks. Worked very well.

If your trying to remove soft corals from rocks-
I have found some rocks to be soft enough to use a razor (carefully!).
Try a utility knife (little safer) and cut into the rock in a "V" pattern.

I also think you can control a flat blade screwdriver and get rocks to break a little more like what you want,...rather than the hammer method.
I have done both. They just never break the way you think or want.

You can also bore into some rocks with screwdrivers to make relief holes to help guide the break.

Whatever method you choose ( I prefer the hammer and chisel technique) I find having a couple of gallons of waterchange water in a dishpan (10 X 12 or equivalent tub) makes it a lot easier to contain and hold the frags/rubble.

I'm on board with the hammer and chisel people, but make sure to use plenty of beer as well :)

I wrapped mine in a towel to catch fragments. Then pounded it with a hammer.

I've used a hacksaw before when I wanted to make sure to keep the chunks intact. Normally yeah, hammer and screwdriver work. :-)
