View Full Version : 2 best changes to your tank?

As stated, what do you think were the two best changes, upgrades, adds, subtracts, that you made that really helped your tank?

Mine seems to be the use of vodka/vinegar dosing to clear the water and a bigger skimmer.

Number one would be learning patience, which can not be bought or installed. The second would be knowledge/resources regarding anything and everything I can about something I want to attempt regarding my tank.

For me, these are true changes as I had to learn them both and apply them to my previous tanks and my current tank. They are by far to me the biggest contributer to running a better tank imo.

After about 3 years I started to use RO/DI, after about 5 years I added a sump.

I'd say for me it was switching from halide to T5 and Tunzes on a controller.

Apex controller w/ the iphone Aquanotes App. Not sure what I did without it. You wake up in the middle of the night and can check on your tank without getting up.

My upgrades are multi dimensional:

My auto top off system, for example, includes a float switch, a 90psi JACO/Murloc fitting solenoid, that allows water to flow directly from my RO system to my Kalkwasser Rxr into my tank.

Second, metal halides are nice, but even my 400's wouldn't be what they are without my Lumenarc reflectors. What a world of change they are from using a crappy ghetto rigged reflector system.

I would miss my late night/early morning observations of the fish, corals, shrimp, crabs, strange worms that only come out at night that I discovered in there, etc.

Besides I'm up for some hydration anyways. I would drink the water on my night stand but I never know if the cat has stuck her little head in there for a drink (see her do it all the time) after licking her butt. :-O

Refugium and calcium reactor. The difference in tank parameters after each addition was incredible.

For me it’s been the addition of a sump/refugium (although this came with upgrading to a slightly larger, drilled tank) and metal halide lighting.

Honorable mentions would be adding more flow and a bigger skimmer

If there was only two pieces of equipment I'd never go without again, it would be hands down my ATO and Vortech MP10.

Litermeter (ATO and automatic water changes!) and easy blade (HATED scraping coralline and would slack badly before I got it, now tank is always crystal clear). Basically they almost completely got rid of the chores I hated so I have time for the ones I enjoy.

The for my 120, the best change has been a full switch over to the Zeovit protocol. Here is a string showing some of the changes in the tank since January 2010.

Vodka has caused some major changes in the tank.
Copperband has beautified the landscape while pleasently picking at the few aptasia floating around.

1. Chaeto fuge, brought and kept my nitrate at 0 in my previous tank. In my current tank for some reason it doesn't grow

2. Chiller, no more worrying about temperature with MH, and no crazy evaporation with fans. Although I might add a fan to induce evaporation so that I can dose more kalk.

as my tanks have a few to many fish in them i have been struggling with hair algae and i tried everything that i was told to do . after almost giving up i came across a RO/DI unit that is top notch and instantly the HA started to show signs of diminishing then i added a tang to each tank and wow what a difference as its almost 100% gone . yes i did have a 2 stage RO unit but my TDS was around 13 when checked by a friend that tests water for the local county and the tests are highly accurate as my test kit always was showing 0 . now i have a 5 stage RO/DI and it is at 0.00 .also my po4 went down to almost undetectable with the new unit so my aquarium life is great now! this was after GFO ,lots of carbon ,a new skimmer ,changing all bulbs to the tune of $500 as was all suggested by people in the reef community .
