View Full Version : Tough green algae on glass...how to remove?

OK, my JBJ 28G has been setup for over 6 months now. In the past couple of months coralline algae has started to grow very nicely on the rocks etc - this is all fine.
But I am getting a green coloured (possibly calcerous) algae that is growing on bottom edge on the glass starting from the sand and above. I have a magfloat and the nimble magnet cleaners but neither are able to remove this stuff.
What can I use to clean this off? It looks right ugly having this 1cm line of green algae growing around the perimeter of the tank on the glass. <!--IBF.ATTACHMENT_2750788-->

JBJ actually sells a scraper that I have used for over a year and like it. The above poster is correct as well, a razor blade is a good cheap method.

Old credit card works to. Get ready for a hand cramp.

+1 for credit card. I've cut my old card into a triangle and it gives you one long edge for stability and two sharper edges for hard-to-clean areas.

I've always blamed this stubborn green stuff on snails. They leave a slime trail that is full of excess nutrients and algae takes advantage of it.
I had this problem on my glass ten gallon with snails. Never had this problem with my snail-less acrylic 33. I can wipe off the algae with my fingers on the 33.

Thanks poeples. I used a gym card and it worked great. Tank looks so much better without the green band running above the sand line.
