Im setting up a 40 breeder with a 30g sump and i currently have a mag12 that im going to use as the return pump is to much flow? will heat be an issue? would an vortech mp20 be overkill in addition to the mag12?

I think that the return would be a little much for the display. If you create a good bubble trap there shouldn't be a problem. as far as flow for a 40 gallon breeder I wouldn't worry about to much about an MP 20....I'm putting an MP10 on my twenty gallon and running a split return on a dual display fuge and DT.

For the mag... It largely depends on your return - how much head loss you have due to the plumbing, how many outlets you have, type of outlet, that sort of thing. It also depends on what you plan on keeping. Is it too much? Not necessarily.

I have no experience with vortechs, so I won't comment on adding one.

i plan on keeping mostly sps with some lps here n there so i want to make sure i have sufficient flow to keep all types of acros, millies, montis (anything and everything). Ok heres a quick description of my set up because i know my question was very vague my bad... Ok so the 40g breeder has 3 holes drilled with a custom overflow againt the center back wall i plan on using 2 for drainage into the sump and im splitting the return into 2 dif heads with spray bars one facing right the other left. for the sump im just going with a regular 3 chamber design... 1 for the return, center for the skimmer heater ect, and the first chamber i may turn into a refugium but im still deciding if thats the route i want to go. im going to drill the sump so that the mag12 doesnt heat up my water and maybe use a ball valve to control the flow to the split return pipes that is if its to much flow. Not sure what you mean by Outlet or bubble trap can you please ellaborate? im fairly new to the larger tanks/sumps i pretty much just know the basics when it comes to sumps/refugiums so yeah... but i have been running a nano-cube for a year and a half now successfully keeping sps, lps, zoos ect so im not completely lost..thanks again

I think the mag12 is WAY too much. I had a mag 2 for a return my my 33, it was just temporary and it was enough for awhile.

An MP10 should be enough, just be sure get one with the new EcoSmart driver.
