Everybody post the TDS of your local tap water.

I just got a TDS meter to test my tap water here in the San Francisco Bay and discovered an amazing 20ppm. I knew we had great tap water here, but this was a suprise after seeing other cities with 300-400ppm.

What is your local tap water TDS everybody?

I can confirm that this time of the year, for the lucky part of the SF Bay Area that gets it, Hetch Hetchy sourced water is coming in around 50-60ppm or less. I was reading 170 back in February - it somewhat depends on the amount of treatment the water goes through before it makes it to the tap, which varies seasonally.

Yep, my tap comes from the Hetch Hetchy. I get 20ppm at my house, and my friend on the coast gets 40ppm. So yea it will vary a little depending upon the exact location in the Bay Area, but anyone getting Hetch Hetchy water is lucky.

When I go out of town I can't drink tap water from anywhere else because I am so used to our clean water. You can sense the contamination in other cities' tap water.

Just for kicks I tested a bottle of Arrowhead water and got a reading of 180ppm. I wonder how much of that is good stuff and how much is bad. Its funny because I know someone buys bottled water thinking it is so much cleaner than tap water, but their tap water is also 20ppm ;)

Hopefully most of the 180ppm in that Arrowhead bottled water is good stuff.

Question

So I have a spectrapure 90gpd unit that came with a dual tds meter. When I click the knob over to in, it reads 005-0010ppm. When I click it over to out, it reads 0ppm. This is good right?

That is very good. Your tap water is nearly pure enough to use in the tank straight from the faucet, if the "Inflow" TDS reading is correct.

I just got a TDS meter to test my tap water here in the San Francisco Bay and discovered an amazing 20ppm.

I have tested this multiple times over a span of ~5 months and the hand held TDS meter has never registered higher than 19ppm. I am in SF as well. At one point, I thought the meter is broken. I then confirmed this with my SpectraPure's inline meter. The "IN" reading has never registered more than 15ppm and dropped to 0ppm after 5 seconds or so. The "OUT" had never registered anything but 0ppm so far.

A few local reefers in SF Bay Area also confirm this is typical. I guess we have good water. :)

That's great for folks up in the upper half of the Bay, though down at the lower end of the Bay (like when you cross into Santa Clara County), the main source switches from Hetch Hetchy to local reservoirs, and I'm reading about 200-250 ppm in.

And every year around December, the water district switches us for about a month as they perform some maintenance to well water, which is noticeably harder (dKH jumps from 10 to about 19). A few years ago it was extremely hard water, they didn't do a good job of getting the word out and a fair number of folks thought their dishwashers had broken, a handlful had even purchased new ones...

Around 60 in Antioch, CA... checked that along time ago.

Yah bay area! :)

A couple months ago I picked up freshwater from a local fishstore and it was 302! I called them up and they said they'd check for me. He called back and said it was 400, but assured me they use this water in all their tanks and its ok to use... So basically bay area tap water is better than that fishstore's :hmm2:

The city of Vernon in BC Canada. We have more than one water source depending on which part of the city you're in. I'm on the Kalamalka Lake source and TDS ranges between 210 & 220 depending on which TDS meter I use, handheld or inline respectively. This time of year the incoming water temperature when my RODI is up & running is about 8 degrees C (sorry you'll have to convert to F yourself, but 0 degrees C is freezing), so production is fairly slow. On the plus side, the colder water tends to yield lower TDS after the RO membrane, pretty much 0, whereas in summer when the water temp is higher, I usually see a TDS of 1 after the RO membrane. My system's been running for more than two years with the original 75 gpd membrane and DI media. Only thing I've changed out so far are the sediment pre filters.

Our city has just spent millions improving the water from another source here in Vernon, Duteau Creek, customers of which regularly dealt with increased turbidity, off coloured water etc. A few boil water notices happen during spring run off time from that source. Anyhow, they're cranking up the water & sewer costs big time to pay for the treatment plant improvements. You folks in the USA may not have heard of a high profile scandal in a town called Walkerton (Ontario I think), where a few people died as a result of negligence on the part of the individuals in charge of the water supply. Ever since that incident, much of Canada has been on a tap water improvement binge. Seems like people on the west coast (east too probably) typically have lower TDS from their tap. I suspect this is because the bulk of their source water is from reservoirs largely filled with soft rain water. Hobbyists from the Vancouver area generally report a tap water TDS of 10 or less. Some of them don't even bother with RO, they just run a DI cartridge.

Does anyone from Miami know? I am dying to find out. My family loves to drink the bottled water from Disani or Zephyr Hills (or is it Zephyr Springs??) and I keep telling them that the water from the handheld Brita filter/water holder would be better than the bottles. Also, we have the long tube filter that sits in the bottom of the fridge to help "clean" the water for the ice cubes and the water that comes out of the water dispenser. I think either on eof those sources is better than the bottled water. Can someone help prove that my theory is correct??
