A guy at my LFS told me that my spare 20 gallon extra tall would be sufficient space for as many as three garden eels. I am skeptical and had originally thought that my 55 was even too small due to the adult size and the fact that they need a tank that can actually hold them. Is there any validity to his claim?

No..3 in a 55 might be ok, but definately not 3 in a 20. It sounds like he was just trying to get some $. What is normally recommended is to keep about 5-6 in a 100gl tank, with about 6" of substrate. They can get to about 1' 2" long, so a 20gl is way too small.

I agree, 3 is to many for your 20L I have one right now in my 18 gal, but it is a species tank and he is flying solo. Eats like a pig and is all around awesome.

Yeah thats what I had thought, but your saying 1 in that 20 would be ok? I would just love to have at least one, they are so cool!

If you were to see the total length of these eels as they grow, you would see that a deep sand bed in a 20 wouldn't be enough. Plus, an 8 inch sand bed in a 20 gallon tank wouldn't leave much room for other things. I would go with at least a 65 tall. jmho.

Hey hey everybody, look what the search brought me to! Lets bump this up a couple years.

Anybody have experience with garden eels? Would a 6" sand bed be good enough? Are they reef friendly? I saw this in a video and they looked sweet! Anymore info on them would be awesome. Thanks!
