Found this today for the first time out of this pair while cleaning the wayyyyy too dirty :twitch: glass. Just low res iPhone pics for now, will post some better shots later today. The tank temp bumped up to 83 the day it happened as the heat in the house had been on and we had a warmish sunny day....probably contributed to timing, which was unexpected.

Just some run of the mill SI percs. Here's some better shots that include the parents. I am sure I have had some of my other clowns spawn before, but they pick spots that I can't see or I just didn't pay attention. This is the first time I have had a dedicated system for just two clowns and that probably helped them settle in too. I keep pretty vibrant (read: overstocked) tanks with lots of shoaling/dither fish. But it was odd that this little prop system that's dirty and underfiltered has some happy clowns. Makes me smile :bounce1:

Here's the parents (pretty hard to get to set still these days!):

And some more clutch shots....they have REALLY darkened up the last day or two. At first I thought it was some sponge or some encrusting SPS at first they were so bright.

I don't intend on raising this clutch. Being the first, not too sure they are viable (we'll wait and see) and I have a new tank arriving April 3rd and am pretty caught up with the build on that....speaking of - probably need to get that thread going too!

I do have a greenhouse near my house that cultures phyto - but the rotifers would be on me and the tons of w/c would be a lot to handle at the moment. If these spawnings continue with regularity, I probably will take a shot at raising a clutch - I have always wanted to.

So I woke up this morning to a cloudy tank and the skimmer pulling oily gunk out of the tank. I immediately remembered that before lights out, the carpet had contorted itself into a trumpet shape and then squeezed down a bit flat - I know, I know, I should have taken pictures - but at the time I didn't think much of it. Except for the cloudy water (which is clearing after some carbon, a new sock, and a small water change) everything is OK. Do carpets usually spawn after lights out? There is literally no other life in the tank that could have caused this cloudiness....so that's my thinking for now.

I did take some tank pics but have none of the funny posturing of the carpet - either before or after.

The water is all clear now, with no ill effects apparently. Here is what it looked like yesterday morning

And these were views from the top down - no lid. This water should looked clear.

And just to prove it was no fluke, they spawned again yesterday. It got up to 82 here yesterday - very warm temps for this time of year. I would guess this again caused the spawning. I have some pics to follow. But given that a new tank arrives Saturday, this is definitely giving me some pause about how to go forward with the move. I have thought I could fit two pairs into a 200ish 60 x 30 x 25 (l x w x h) but now I have a pair spawning maybe I'll not want to take the risk. Any opinions?

Congrats on the eggs! I wouldnt risk putting them together if you have a breeding pair.

you just gotta love the ones that accidently have eggs, just shows how well our systems really are (even if we don't think their up to par) I think that sometimes we all try to much with our systems, and we all need to remember its nature in a big cup, oh and congrats on your eggs

No kidding. I consider this system the "junk tank" It's certainly gunky and not pretty. But evidently it's good enough for the fish I keep in it.

I do think I will be keeping these guys, which means I will have to find another home for my SI percs that are almost all blacked out: they are the darkest percs I have ever seen, but they are not yet growing so they may develop some more orange as they mature.

These guys keep laying clutches of eggs, but most only last for a 4-5 days. Does this mean they are infertile or that they are just a young pair still working out the reproducing thing?

My Occelaris pair's eggs are about to hatch, probably tonight. All silvery, developed eyes and all. I WISH I had the knowledge and time to rear them, but I don't. A bit bummed about it, but one of these days! Its not about rearing to sell.. its about rearing to just rear them. After all unlikely it can be a money making enterprise considering the effort and expense involved to rear.

If all goes to plan I'll have a finished man-cave-fish-room in the basement later this summer. Plenty of room for a bunch of tanks.

Congrats!
That's a pretty big clutch of eggs for a first percula spawn. I'd bet they've been spawning behind your back for a while. LOL. I agree with the others. Don't risk mixing the clowns.
