I am having a canopy custom made for my 400W MH/T5 combo unit. How high should I have my fabricator construct the canopy to help avoid heat problems in the tank? I'd prefer not to have to buy a chiller.
Thanks

At least 8" but it is still going to really heat up your water you will have to have a few fans then still you will probably need a chiller. 400 watt puts out a ton of heat

I have my 250w metal halides 13" from the water and it raises my temp 2 to 3 degrees at least.

What do I have to do to avoid the chiller? The tank is 30" deep which is why I went with the 400W.

keep the house cooler and run the halides not as long is my guess.

Small fans blowing thru the canopy and across the water surface makes a HUGE difference

I run my halides without a hood just to keep temps down.
My tank is 32 deep. I have my lights about 10 inches off the water. It was raising my temp about 4 degrees. Then I went and got 2 little fans, lowered my temp quick.
