which cameras will do the job for upclose coral shots with decent detail

Depends on what you want to spend 200 dollars or 2,000 dollars!

You'll get lots of information in the Photography forum. However, you can find P&S cameras that do a decent job of Macro photography, OR, you can spend a lot more money and buy a DSLR with a Macro lens. I shoot with a Canon Rebel Xt and 100mm Macro. I've seen just as good of pictures, with decent P&S cameras in Macro mode.
