Might need to use a 48" 50/50 bulb to supplement the lighting fixture.http://www1.thedwebsite.net:8080/picshar/reeftank/IM001414.JPG

Water is not very cloudy at all. Surprised that it only took 6 five gallon buckets to fill it up. I don't think there is 3 gallons worth of sand. The buckets were pretty full so maybe there was more then 5 gal in each. My wife and mother in law who lives with us can't stand the smoke from the fire place so it has not been used in many years, so this seems like a good use of that space. My wife had this desk we were not using and the tank fits on it perfectly. I did not trust the legs so I am using the bricks. Got to acclimate some fish next
hopefully have another pic soon with the light and take the skimmer out of the box and see what that's all about.

nice tank

what kind of corals do you plan on keeping?

Softies & LPS, nothing very exotic. I have the light on now, it seems to be enough for viewing not sure what you can grow with it. The Tunze skimmer is not doing much wonder if thats because it's new and only been on for about 15 minutes and also it's a tank full of fresh mixed S/W. I will post another pic in a few minutes.

I have much more rock getting a mutiday fresh tap water soaking, then will dry out and cycle it. Kind of like the minimal rock going on now so might not put a whole lot in. I have about 120 lbs so I will be selling a lot of it.

i might be missing something and you may be experienced, i cant see you post count or join date from ny phone. but it looks kike you filled you tank and added fish at relatively the same time? you do realuze you should cycle a new tank 3-4 weeks before adding fish?

I took down a bigger tank and that rock was in the holding tank with the fish after coming from the other tank.

Was pleased to see the skimmer was kicking when I got home from work today, I heard they can take a few days but this was less then 12 hours.

How do you like the LED's?

Looks like it has alot of potential, personally I'd chuck more live rock in. Just design it so you keep the simplistic look (ie: Tall bommy like structures rather then the common rock wall). It just looks to barren and that amount of rock won't do very much at all in the way of filtering or cycling a tank.

I like the LEDs a lot, have some shimmer and love that it only uses 24 watts. It has a very focused spread like 10% I think, wonder if I position some low light demanding corals directly under a beam if that will be okay. It's only 5" wide so there is plenty of room to add a one or two light strip light if I need to.

I have about 120 lbs. Fiji rock from my 125 I took down that I am soaking in fresh water then I will dry out and recycle. I was thinking about putting 40 lbs or more in but really am liking the open look. Do want to have plenty of open space so will see how that goes when the rock is ready..

Do you know if that lighting you have can support sps?

I would not think that it could support SPS.

After a few days of soaking my rock in fresh Tap water then pressure washing and a few days sitting in the sun I am ready to cycle it. I picked three decent pieces that should look good in the tank.

I'm sure the juice box is for size reference.

My dad is setting up a similiar 30 long. It's going to look sweet as a long shallow reef tank!

Good luck.

I wish i bought a 30g long instead of a regular 30g. Really like the shallow reefs!! Tanks gonna look awesome fully stocked

30longs are tough - the narrow (front to back) dimensions are tricky. It would not be my first choice.

Back to the OP... maybe I missed it, but what are the dimensions on that tank? Is it the 33long you have listed in your sig? Tagging along... interested to see how things progress.

nice, i have a 36x8x9, 12 gallon. 2 39w T5s is all I have to light the tank.

Yes it is a 33L 48"x13"x12" but It took less then 30 gals in it, then I had to remove a little more water for matching the skimmer ref mark.. I had one a number of years ago and like several things about this size. I am hoping to go very low wattage and hope these lights will be good enough for some Zoas, Rics, Shrooms, Xenia (sp) and other low light corals. There won't be much water depth from the top of the rock to the surface so the lights do not have to penetrate very far. It's at 44.5 watts now with the Tiny HOB filter I just added. (2.5 w) Lights are 24W, skimmer is 10w and two PH's @ 4 w each. It will be interesting to see if it works out, I was thinking I would add a 48" strip light but now want to avoid that if I can. Was going to do a 5 gal W/C per week but now thinking maybe 7.5 gal for a 25% W/C per week. Anyone have an idea on want I can use for a charcoal sock in this tiny HOB filter?

Still waiting for the three large pieces of rock to cycle, it's been about 2.5 weeks so far. my son has a web cam on the tank. http://www1.thedwebsite.net:8080/fishcam/ Lights are on from 2:00 pm to 10:00 PM ET

Finally my rock has cycled, was two days short of four weeks. I am going to wait till the water clears up some more before posting a pic. It can be seen in the video link in the above post, I'm pretty happy with it. Will reposition the cam when my son gets home from school, need to plug it into another outlet and am not sure if that will cause a problem with software and it working after that.

Tank looks nice. one question, do you have the 16 led fixture or the 8 led fixture?

tbar
05/23/2010, 03:03 PM
It's the 16 white 8 blue fixture that is 36" long. It has retractable brackets on the ends that can be pulled out to fit on a 48" tank. I just realized that the Tunze 9002 skimmer can fit inside this extended bracket so I can easily fit another one of these fixtures on this tank. I will probably do that as it only cost $123.00, I should have ample light after that.
Another pic after moving the rock around yet again.

I put another 36" marineland LED fixture on this tank. I am having an issue with cyno right now. Hopefully it will dissipate soon.
