hi guys

just looking into purchasing 1st macros

do you just simply dump them in your tank and watch them grow? or do they need more care than that...

do they have a minimum sg? (will be placed in a 1.020sg FOWLR tank)
temperature?
obviously good lighting
and biologically what do they need to grow? ammonia? nitrite?

looking to purchasing some caulerpa and halimeda varieties.

Macro algae consumes phosphates and nitrates from what I understand. I bought some chaeto and it ended up dying because of the lack of nitrates and phosphates. I noticed that my chaeto dies off much more quickly when I used phosban which reduced my phosphates. High power lights are not required for chaeto. Not too sure about the other types but I doubt it. I would stick with chaeto because caulerpa can become sexual and releases everything it absorbs and crash your tank. Just stick it in your sump in an area of high current and place a small light and you should have no problems.
