I'm looking to buy some synthetic salt... Where should I go to get the best deal? Sounds like alot of people like Tropic Marin Pro? Been using red sea salt for half an year. But, where do you guys go for salt? and how much did you get them for?

I recently switched to normal Tropic Marin after going from reef crystals to Tropic Marin pro. The pro was to inconsistent for me. Alk, cal and mag would be all over the place from one bucket to another. Reef Crystals didn't mix up as clean and I had to buffer a lot as well. So far normal Tropic Marin has been consistent with mag 1200 alk about 10 and cal at 390. I buffer the cal up a bit but the tank looks great and seems very happy with it. As for where to get it that depends on where you are located?

200 gallon bucket is $65 at marine depot. If you will call it you can save the extra $20 on the shipping weight. I usually buy the 300 gallon bag from a store by me but then it's best to have a couple old salt buckets to put it in so it stays nice and dry after opening it.

Go to socal tropical fish outlet (Tom), he's got very reasonable prices on the TM bucket. TM is the brand I prefer, it mixes quickly and cleanly and is very consistent with it's levels. BTW i've recently used the BRIGHTWELL brand and I was also very satisfied with the basic numbers (CA/ KH/ MG), I've been very satisfied with all their products especially their LIQUIDREEF which maintained my tank at ideal (at least in my opinion) CA levels for a couple of years before I got my CA reactor. I believe Marine Depot is in Garden Grove but it is not a store front. They are an online retailer that allows will call so you can save on the shipping of big heavy items like salt. You would have to order online or over the phone first and note that you would be will calling the item.

I have been using IO but the parameter for sps tank is very low( calcium ,alk, mag) it also mix white so tomorrow i will try D&D because heard a lot of good things about it . for 7 dollars more!

This is my opinion on the salt i've used in order:
red sea coral pro - mixes very clear and clean with minimal residue
ocean pure pro - mixes cloudy with no residue.
DD - mixes very clear but has a lot of residue
tropic marin - clear and no residue
Instant ocean and reef crystals will be next on my list =] hope this helps

Of the 3 that i have used..

-Coralife - mixed pretty well - only had residue if i let the water sit in the bin more thana few days. high Ca, alk and mg were ok
-IO - tended to mix a little cloudy and leave alot of residue on the insde of my mixing bin. parameters were so so - usually had to supplement CA and MG
-Oceanpure - mixes really clear and didnt leave any residue in my bin. CA and MG were really high and alk was around 10 iirc

This is the standard oceanpure, not the pro. I have a 50 gallon bag of the pro to try once i get through the bag of standard oceanpure.

I am with psykokid on the Oceanpure. It mixes clear, leaves no residue, and has consistently good parameters. $30 for a 200G case seals the deal.

I am curious to see your results with the Oceanpure Pro Reef. I just ruined a whole case because it was in the back of my truck and I was unaware of the forecast for rain...damn. Its going into a FO setup now that the alk and ca are gone.

Instant Ocean barely dissolves for me, and after it does, there will be a layer of calcium carbonate in the bottom of my mixing barrel.
