Does anyone know what species of Lionfish this is?

Thanks

It looks like Dendrochirus bellus to me... hard to say though, they are not a common lionfish and I am definitely not the most expert lionfish identifier on these boards.

it looks a lot like D. barberi, the white speckling on its flanks is there, as are the spots on its second dorsal and caudal fins, but i'm not seeing red eyes, however, they may not have developed yet. how big is it?

sure is purty tho!

These fish are not mine and are not in the US.

They are posted at a Fish Shop in Japan.

Both fish are right at 11cm.

That's a barberi alright.

Mine is a baby... or I guess a juvie now.

For size comparison, that's a small-med nerite to the right.

I still think it's a D. bellus, it doesnt have the whiskered face like the barberi does, imo. This is all conjecture ;)

I also think based off the fact bbox has it, it is most likely a relatively rare lionfish :)

Any idea what the price is on it?

They call it a "Hawaiian Lion fish." Based on that, and it's obviously not a Sphex, I would also guess Barberi. It's 8,800Yen, which is 95USD.

while i have never seen a real live D Bellus- I do know a distinguishing feature of D Bellus is the pectoral fin rays are tightly paired then at the midpoint of the pec fin they splay out to form a "Y". Therefore i woul dsay that the photo is NOT a D bellus

I did see two D bellus that were collected in japan on ************ a few years back, heres a video of one of them (http://www.youtube.com/user/AquariumAddicts#p/a/f/0/AHbv0zFtT0w), and a photo (http://theoceanconnection.com/images/Fish/Scorpionfish/Dendrochirus_bellus.jpg)

Therefore, based on the price(95 USD is cheap), partially red eyeball, and dorsal fin membranes- that this fish appears to be a D barberi, but the axcillary surface of the pectoral fin does not look right to me.

Recty--Bbox does have it-- and to them an hawai'ian lionfish would be considered "rare"- since they are also not heavily collected for the states either

Dang, I wanted it to be a D. bellus :)

I didnt realize it was only up for about $95. I also hadnt thought about Hawaiian fish being rarer in Japan then here, heh, it's funny how it works sometimes.

That would be sweet. With you guys having good photography skills, I can easily leave vicariously through you.
