I plan on taking 2 cups of sand from my current tank and seeding the new sand after I set it up. Do i take sand from the top of my sand bed? When I seed it do I bury it? Do I rinse it? help...

Try not to dig too deep when you get the sand, if you pull up black sludge you've gone too deep. Leave the sand in piles on top of the new sand bed. You can also scoop out a little crater and dump it in. After a week, smooth out the pile.

+1 thegrun. You dont want to dig to deep or you could throw your water parameters off (nitrites and nitrates).

im breaking down my tank to move and i will be replacing my sand bed. How do I store the sand for a week to keep it "alive" so it will still be alive when i seed with it?

Not sure if this is the right answer, but I would just put it in a rubbermaid with some water. This is what i have done in the past and then just gave it a good rinsing with ro water before i put it back in.

Just put it into a bucket of tank water and put a powerhead in there to keep the water moving.

Throw (well, set) a heater in there also.
