Rimless and acrylic tanks need it.

unless your tank has a floating bottom you should use it.
I've used it on every tank I have set up in the last 35 years.

Forgive me for butting in but why do rimless and acrylic tanks need it?

I have it under my 50g acrylic sump....I was told that acrylic tends to 'flex' or 'bend' on the floor/stand it is on from any level deviation (uneveness) would cause added stress points to the tank which could lead to a crack.
With the weight of a full tank, the foam will naturally 'form over' any imperfections and contours on the stand/floor (bottom side of foam) while keeping even/level support across the entire bottom of the tank (top side of foam).
