Plumbing a return with a Maxi-Jet 1100?

I have a Maxi-Jet 1100 available and wanted to use it as my return. It's rated for 294gph. It only has barbed fittings on the output but I think I would much rather use PVC or flexible PVC. Anyone have any experience with this pump? How can I go from a barbed fitting to PVC? Any tips on what parts I need that will allow for easy maintenance? I currently have 2 ball valves (1 for return and 1 for feed), some barbed fittings, and some vinyl tubing. Lowes or Home Depot are within 5 minutes so set me up with a shopping list.
