Hello,

I thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and start a build thread on my new tank. I've really enjoyed reading everyone else's builds, and figured I would contribute to the wealth of information found here.

I currently have a 5'x2'x2' 150g reef tank, that is really just too big for me. I don't have the time or money to make it what it should be.
So with that in mind, I decided it was time to downgrade to something a little more manageable. Before the 150g, I had a 40breeder, which I absolutely loved. This time around, I thought I would stick with the same footprint, just go a little taller. That brings us to the 58g oceanic tank I was using as a sump for the 150g. I removed the baffles, and got it cleaned up and drilled, for a 1" bulkhead. I went with a DIY semi-C2C overflow

I'm not one to buy pre-made stands, so it was off to the shop to build my own. I'd like to thank RedEDGE2k1, for coming up with his awesome design (which I pretty much copied) and for documenting it so well.

I still need to add doors, and build the canopy, but it's a start.

For the sump, I went with a 20L tank, with a bubble trap in the middle, separating the skimmer from the return pump. The skimmer is a swc200, which was brought over from the 150g. you can also see the 6x39w ATI sunpower fixture, that'll be over the tank.

I opted against a refuge, as I dose vodka and never saw much growth out of the macro algae anyways.

after the rock was done in it's bleach bath, it was time to aquascape.

this is about as far as i've got, hopefully more progress will be made this weekend.

equipment:

swc200 skimmer
6x39w ATI sun power
2x modded maxi-jets on DIY "swirler stiens"
undecided on return pump, either maxijet1800 or sicce syncra 1.5

feel free to let me know what you think, good or bad.

Here are a few more pictures of the rockwork, now that things have cleared up a little.

A better shot of the DIY swirler stiens, and the PVC they attach to. You can also see the screen top I made for the tank, I plan on keeping numerous wrasses.

And the 3 fish I kept from the 150g that are currently in QT getting a prazipro and copper treatment.

Well I decided to try the Sicce Syncra 1.5 for the return pump, it's only been a few days but so far I like it, it's efficient and quiet.

I also got all my corals transferred over from the 150g. Here are some new pictures.

Thank you both very much,

Both corals in that picture are acans, the orange one directly above the wrasses head was sold to me as an "Agent Orange Acan" from cherrycorals, but i've never seen another like it, thats a bad pic, it actually has orange/blue/green/purple/white in it, It's not the Tyree Agent Orange Acan

Well I haven't had a chance to finish the canopy, but I did get the electrical panel started. It has 16 outlets controlled by 8 switches.

I also made a couple of media reactors out of some scrap PVC I had laying around for gfo and carbon.

That stand is very nice. Personally, I would paint the pvc pipe you used as hangers. Krylon, Valspar, Rustoleum all have a decent plastic paint.

I actually just did this for some visible plumbing I have...it makes a world of difference.

Thanks insaneclownfish, I'll actually have a canopy that covers the light fixture and that PVC. Here is a picture of rededge's stand/canopy that I've used for inspiration. (I.e. Copied haha hopefully it's cool for me to post his pic, if not let me know)

I also decided to turn an old kritter keeper into a copepod haven, as I plan on keeping a few fish that feed on them. I drilled numerous holes into it for water flow, and filled it with rock rubble. This way I can easily remove it for cleaning rather than filling my sump with the rubble.

(disclaimer: all copepod eaters will be eating prepared foods before being placed in the aquarium.)

Thank you, it's not the fastest build but I've been happy with it so far.

I'd love to see how you made those maxi-mod holders... Got a build thread?

Certainly, although I can't take credit for them, I just followed this thread

And one of the three starfish in the tank, a red serpeant. There is also a brittle, and a sandsifting star.

Well, unfortunately the pipefish didn't make it, after about 3 weeks, I found it dead in the QT. It hadn't lost any weight, and was eating fine until the day it died.

on a brighter note, I finely got the canopy started. Here are a few pictures of the progress so far. I'm moving next week, so it's on hold for now, but hopefully I'll have it finished in a few weeks.
