In another forum, there has been discussion of ways around the issue with TRIACs and small devices such as MJ pumps, solenoids, dosing pumps, etc.
One solution reported as successful with another brand of controller power modules is using single-outlet surge suppressors in between the low-power device and the power module. These can be had for about $5/each.
A few examples:

http://www.altex.com/Tripp-Lite-Single-Outlet-Surge-Suppressor-SPIKECUBE-P143796.aspx
I don't have an EB8 to experiment with, or I would gladly do so. It would be interesting to see if any of these actually do increase the power factor sufficiently for reliable operation of the EB-8's TRIACs as was reported for the other model.
One potential drawback... they might be big enough to block adjacent outlets. But that can be overcome with short power extention pigtails - I've seen 3-packs at WalMart for 6 bucks.
Any one willing to try a couple of different models and report back here?
