Is there a float-shutoff valve that can be hung from container edges(maybe even adjust the depth)? That way its portable too?

Why does one top of water in sump and not in tank? Can I top off tank directly from RO unit?

Since I dont' have a sump, I top off my tank with floats in the tank. Check these out:

thanks ! But anything non - electric with just water pressure and floating? (like the toilet flushing float) that can be "hung"/moved?

I've used a coralife float valve in my sump for a couple of years with no issues. I have had issues with them in my RO/DI reservoir. They tend to fill up with water there. The flow rate is so low in the sump to counteract evaporation that the water never flows to the crack in the surface that causes them to fill up and fail.

I'm using one of these for my RO/DI reservoir. http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/adjustable-float-valve-for-reverse-osmosis-systems.html

This is what is in my sump until I get around to replacing it with one of the valves above. http://www.fishsupply.com/sfv-esu6023.html

I don't have a sump yet either so use a glass wine carboy pressurized with an air pump and mechanical float valve as a top off system. Float valve is a common whole house humidifier type, about $10 at most hardware/home reno locations. These are used in the humidifiers attached to your main furnace, generally natural gas and keep the water in the humidifier tray at a constant level. Fairly bullet proof. I had to fashion my own holder which is adjustable using holes at several different levels. Nylon screws threaded into the acrylic holder keep it fastened to the rim and also allows for some adjustment. The float valve itself has an adjustment wheel on it as well.

Float valve:

Glass carboy ATO container pressurized with air pump on a timer:

I would recommend against running your top off directly from your RODI system. Frequent cycles on a RODI will give you TDS creep. It's better to run the RODI for at least 5 to 10 gallons, more is better, at a time.

Having an ENDLESS supply of top off water is asking for a flood... a failure of the float (mechanical, electric, snail, etc) and you have an endless supply of water going ... eventually on your FLOOR...

I use a container that gets me 3 days... about the duration my tank can go without food, but a volume that my sump could handle all the water if the float stuck and it wouldnt affect the salinity to the point of killing the fish.

Indymann,Goodpoint...Can I just use float to fill my rubbermaid 32g can? Or is that risky too..I guess it is right?

What setup do you use to fill sump from that small "container"?

JBJ ATO with 1 sensor in the ATO top off container and 1 sensor in the return section of the sump.

I turned off the alarm setting that sounds when the pump runs (dont need to hear that).

I have a RO line run to the top off container that I manually fill every 3 days.
